Best bang for your buck if you are looking for a receiver that can do 4k 120Hz HDR 10-bit. You need 40Gbps bandwidth for that and if you are stuck on the old TSR 700 model Costco was selling you will be limited to 60Hz..

This might not be a big deal to many, but someone that is specifically looking for that capabilities, all the receivers are in the 700-800+ range for entry level stuff, so to have one that can do it in the $500 range is phenomenal, even though the brand ins Onkyo and is not favored as well by many die hard audiophiles.

Imo, this is a great buy, and I am someone who has spent about $15,000 on my home theater system. It's not right for me since I do 7.2.4 surround, but for someone maybe looking for high end audio in a normal family room, not like a dedicated home theater room, this is basically an awesome deal, and to have the security and backing of Costco to buy it from is even better, imo.
Go and educate yourself instead of spreading old information as if it's current. Onkyo WAS in a period of insolvency through no fault of their own. Several years ago, Onkyo's former parent company Gibson (yes, the guitars) went on a wild spending spree that forced them (Gibson) into bankruptcy and in the process left Onkyo high and dry without funding. Since Onkyo is too valuable of a company to just let die off, they were acquired late last year by a joint venture of Voxx (which owns the Klipsch brand), and Sharp Electronics. Financially, Onkyo is doing just fine now. Welcome to the year 2022.
If I understand it correctly, this would not be able to output 5.1.4 correct? What budget receivers are there that people know of that can?

This seems a little under powered. Any decent mid-range receivers that do 120hz 4K and have at least 120w/ch? The room my surround sound is in is pretty large.

life time.
source: retired the TSR 700 over 1 year later as they never worked out the HDMI 2.1 issue (at least when i returned it)
I too just had to return a Yamaha that was about 2 years old as it crapped out. I didn't have the radio antenna and while they asked about it, they ultimately took it back. Keep all parts and you should be fine. Costco again for the win!

What's the advantage of having dual HDMI outputs? I just got the Yamaha TSR-700 Costco deal from a couple weeks ago but I'm not a gamer. Thanks in advance for any comments.
Some people have a direct view TV and a projector with a pull down screen. Having a receiver with 2 HDMI outs makes it easier to switch between them.

Im not an audiophile, so I don't understand alot of these specifications. Can someone tell me if my passive subwoofer would work with this?
You would need a sub with a built in amp or some way to split power between your main speakers and your sub, this amp can't do that.

Is there any benefit of running HDMI through the receiver versus running HDMI straight to the TV and then optical cables to the receiver? I realize there is always a chance that the two devices may get their inputs off synch, but otherwise it seems like this would be a better option so that the TV can natively handle the video while the receiver handles the audio.
I would recommend using HDMI (ARC) to output your sound from the TV versus using optical because HDMI supports more sound formats. It doesn't really matter if you run your inputs directly to the TV instead of the Receiver. It just depends on if you want to use your receiver remote or TV remote to switch inputs. As long as the Receiver supports the same formats as the TV (for passthrough) you should have the same experience either way. I will say that I did experience A/V sync issues on my Sony receiver when connecting inputs directly to the TV instead of the receiver.

I have Onkyo TX-NR686 hooked to RP-8000F and RP-450C. Looking to use an amplifier like Emotiva but mine or this receiver does not have pre-outs for amplifier.
Unfortunately pre-outs seem to be relegated to just higher end receivers these days compared to years past. For example, on Denon, you're looking at the X3700 line at a minimum for pre-outs, and none of their S line (incluinge the S960) support it. On Onkyo, you have to be on the RZ line to get them (eve n he model above the on [7xx0] in this deal doesn't carry support them). In years past, the 6x6 and 7x7 series both supported it.

How many channels driven and what impedance of speakers? See my response above; realistically, you'd probably need a higher end receiver and amp to do that, especially for more than two channels. With that said, I fill a fairly large room with a RZ830 and no amp (but I do have a couple subs to cover the low end).

The Onkyo brand is definitely not what it used to be....
Oh no, one person had issues with their Onkyo! Certainly that means the entire brand is tainted.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I use dual HDMI outputs because my tv HDMI port 1 is ARC and Ports 3 and 4 are 4k120hz. I run two HDMI cables to the tv and everything is covered.

There seems to be a certain limitation if trying to output Dolby Vision on both HDMI outs at the same time. Without Dolby Vision I do not see a limitation.

Thank you, good to know I can essentially game on my TV and 49 inch gaming monitor at the same time!

I currently have a Sony STR-DN1030.. the eARC keeps cutting out and I have to pull it out and reseat the HDMI cable. (Not the cable) it's a little underpowered for my room. I'm running 8ohm speakers at 7.1. 2 tower speakers, a large center channel and 4 ceiling speakers. of course a sub as well.

5.1.4 requires 9 amplified channels, and those are not the entry level AVR. They are usually $1000+ AVR.
