frankly, without starting a debate, any decent full synthetic in the $10-$20 range is fine enough for everday use if changed regularly. but if you have an exotic or luxury car, you'll probably want something with european specs.

A brand new car could sit on a lot for a year or more, then get sold and go a full interval. I get the once every 12 months manufacturers recommend from a cya perspective but I think it's overkill if you're not in a humid environment. To each their own.
