EDIT: after looking at CDKeys.com more closely, they have 6 Month Live Gold [cdkeys.com] passes available for $31.59. If I currently have GPU and purchase Live Gold, will the 6-month pass upgrade to GPU for 6 months? Seems like a much better option if so.

No as I have learned it doesn't convert 1:1 if you are currently an Ultimate subscriber. Some people wait until current membership expires then look for a deal on gold via cdkeys eneba or other other places which can often be found on Slickdeals.
