This is a nice compact reciprocating saw at the lowest price it's ever been at Amazon, according to the Camel.

Bought it last year and it worked well for trimming trees using a pruning blade. It's light enough you can hold it one handed if you have decent strength, but not for too long. Was handy to occasionally use one handed over my head to get branches up high. Otherwise requires two hands for extended use.

Has longer stroke length with nearly full power like the full size recip saws, but smaller size and lighter weight. Only problem is it has some vibration, as most smaller recip saws do, because to save weight, they lack the vibration dampening system. But that's the trade off for to get a nearly full-powered yet compact, lighter-weight saw.

Details:
  • DEWALT 20V reciprocating saw has up to 2.5x more runtime
  • Compact 14.5-inch length fits in between studs and in other tight spots
  • Only 5 lbs. in weight (tool only)
  • Keyless 4-Position Blade Clamp for quick and easy blade changes and cutting versatility
  • 1-1/8-inch stroke length
  • Variable speed trigger delivers up to 2,900 SPM
  • Bright LED light to illuminate dark work areas

Well, that ended quickly. It was being sold by Amazon, but now that $135 price is through a 3rd party seller. So Amazon must have sold out. May want to keep an eye on it to see if they repost it at that $129 price.

Would the Milwaukee 12v HACKZALL be effectively the same thing for light use?

I think that's much lighter and better for one-handed operation. Also will likely take longer to cut things with that than this Dewalt, which has a longer stroke length and more power. But if you want a really lightweight recip saw, the Hackzall is supposed to be great for its smaller size.

Thank you. I might grab the Hackzall then. I won't be doing any heavy cutting, just occasional branches and 2x4s etc.

The M12 will be fine, just don't expect it to cut as fast… that 1/2'' stroke is a killer and without an adjustable shoe (all of these small guys don't have), your not using much of that blade.

I have the M18 HackZall and the XR Compact in this deal. For small stuff I grab the M18 almost all the time, the vibration in the XR Compact is horrendous… I used to cut with my full size Ridgid Gen5X recip one handed all the time, even with all that weight hanging out in front, it was easier on the wrist/forearm than the XR Compact.

It's a shame honestly… the multi position head on the XR Compact is sooooooo useful.
