Pretty low end chromebook. Amazon has it for $135 and not $150

Soldered. You only tend to find upgradable ram in really old model Chromebooks or in more expensive models that tend to just be modified versions of windows laptops (and even that is rare)

Yeah found out about that BS about a month ago with these chromebooks. The 3's I bought just over 2 years ago expire this summer Mad I've gotten a laptop since then so I'll be fine, but now my mother has to get something else (well, I'll have to get something for her, she can't afford to replace it).

The good news is that new models get a generous 8 years of support. The bad news is that plenty of devices are available "new" in retail which don't have 8 years left since the AUE date is tied to the introduction of the device (and plenty of devices in retail were introduced before 8 years was yet the standard, sounds like this might've been the case for your purchases?).

At the same time, don't allow the AUE date to feel like a death knell for the device itself. Plenty of users can continue to get usage out of a Chromebook past the AUE date. I can certainly understand why you might want a device like your mother's daily driver to be actively supported: I've done the same migration with my oldest child's Chromebook (his R11 was about to expire this summer, so I migrated him to a device with a 2028 AUE date). At the same time, if you're able to use a Chromebook with a Linux or Android browser you've likely reduced a large amount of risk associated with losing updates to the core browser (considering that such a browser could continue to receive updates and operates within a sandbox inside the ChromeOS device). At that point your primary concern would be vulnerabilities with the core ChromeOS (for reference, ChromeOS vulnerabilities are typically associated with browser malware or scam Android apps - the latter also being a problem for Android in general).

Good luck!
Jon
