Just purchased this from Amazon for $26.99 last week. Installed a Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB, M.2 2280 in it. Just using for backup. It does get warm after 30-45 minutes. There is a plastic screw for shorter drives, the spring-loaded button is for 2280. Seems to work well. Also purchased a usb c to usb a adapter. I have an old (over 10 years) laptop with usb a 2.0. The backup still works, albeit at a much lower speed. No complaints fo far.

Does anyone know if you can upgrade Samsung 980 Pro firmware using this? I'm wanting to do it to unlock full speeds before I install it in my PS5

Looks like the Sabrent one supports nvme, is usb 3.2 vs 3.1, and a few other things than the one you bought for less. The Sabrent might be better priced for the moment when compared to devices that compare closer to it.

Gotta love electronics. Spec this spec that, compatible not compatible. By the time you're done looking into something, a better deal might show up or a new version gets released. Favorite is when that deal shows up after you're all settled in and have everything set up

The one you linked only works for SATA based m.2 drives. This sabrent can do both SATA and pcie NVME

Looks like this one is NVMe and SSD compatible, while the one you posted is only for SSD.

1. buying this enclosure ($23) and 1 TB SSD ($90) for total of around $113
against
2. Sandisk NVME Extreme Portable 1TB Solid State Drive from Costco for $100?
Both seems similar speeds. Any other advantage other than I can upgrade/replace the drive on 1.?

You need an internal slot in order for Samsung Magician to recognize it's a Samsung drive.

This enclosure has the RTL9210B chip. It seems to be the best out of all the other chips offered in enclosures. One way to tell is if it can run SATA and NVME. I bought 2 of them recently, one as an extra once I get more SSD's.

You could use a separate MVNE SSD as either an external or internal drive whenever you feel like it.
I have had 3.5 HDD and 2.5 SATA SSD enclosures, and this one. The former two are way bigger than 3.5" and 2.5" HDD or SSD, so it is not as portable as to use just external HDD or SSD.
However, MVNE SSDs are already so thin and light, using it with an enclosure is no different from using an external MVNE SSD. So, buying an enclosure and a regular MVNE SSD can be cheaper and serve both purposes (internal and external).
Now Samsung.com sells 2tb 970 Evo Plus for $180. So, buying that and this will cost a bit over $200. External 2TB 1,000MB MVNE SSDs from Samsung or Sandisk sells for $250 when they are on sale. Plus, when you feel like it, you can just use that 2TB SSD as an internal.

Just clarifying it's not just the speed requirement (which may or may not need to be met, just a PCIe 4.0 drive, this has been debated a ton), but it must be installed into the internal SSD expansion port in the PS5 to expand PS5 storage.

Nvme m2 disks are like RAM. They're chips soldered to a pcb. Dropping them would not do much harm unless you slam it on the floor.

This is a very nice enclosure. I bought one and a 1TB sn550 because wifey was lugging 3 mechanical drives around everywhere and not really taking good care of them. This saved her a lot of space and weight while eliminating a likely near term failure.

I have a similar enclosure from Alxum that I have been using for data transfers at work. It slides and I can't make use of the thermal pad as I am often swapping drives. It did fail after a few months but they did warranty it without any pain.

With this deal the Alxum will go to permanent work duty and this will be my personal enclosure.
