Why is 4gb of RAM still legal at this point come on man

This Dell is much faster than the R3 3250. The CPU cannot be changed but the RAM and SSD can be upgraded in both. It is easy to remove the bottom of the Inspiron to add more RAM and there is a 2.5" bay that can be used with the NVMe.

I would personally buy a refurbished laptop with a 8gb RAM than buy a new one with 4gb. Unless you plan to open this one and replace it with more memory.
Currently on dells website the deals for refurbished laptops are even worse. Celeron dual core cpu and those are upgraded to windows 11, yuck.

And if your gonna buy refurbished, and I'm no stranger to buying a former dell latitude on eBay, there's always risks. I do recommend that route but with caution. You don't want to buy a 10 year old laptop. And you don't want to buy one that has been damaged but still works, who knows how much life left it has. I do like dell Latitide. But I also like HP probook. Those are in my opinion, the two best refurbished laptop models you can buy. They were designed to be durable. Most every other laptop is not designed to be durable. So when you buy a used normal every day consumer laptop they often don't last very long. And then you have to know a thing or two about computer hardware, what to look for what to avoid and most people don't understand that. You might think an i5 is better than an i3 and that's true but does everyone understand the generations of processors? How is someone gonna know that a third gen i5 is not a good idea to spend 250$ on eBay for?

I digress.

HP Processor Ranks much lower than this Dell. But, if that doesn't matter to you RAM/HDD might make up for it.

The hinge on this thing reminds me of the Dell Adamo XPS from back in the day. Looks cool, but how comfortable is that little hinge digging into your lap?

I'd personally go with the HP since you get more RAM (8 vs 4), Hard Drive storage (256 vs 128), and an IPS screen (IPS vs probably TN for Dell). The HP is just better all around.
Does the Dell have any advantages over the HP? Seems like a no brainer for the HP

The big advantage is the i3 is significantly more powerful than that Ryzen 3. When you're talking entry level CPUs that could mean the difference between a usable machine and a frustrating one.

I still wouldn't recommend a 4gb machine to anyone. Even if it's upgradable, by the time you've bought another stick of RAM you might as well just pay a bit more for a better laptop in most cases.

I do agree that 4GB is likely to be frustrating for most people. I can't agree with the other half, though - Someone in this thread mentioned getting this model with 8GB for $350. I'm pretty sure you can do better than $50 for an extra 4GB stick of ram. (if not 16).

Certainly not impossible, but for example I just checked my local MicroCenter. They don't have a single 4gb stick of DDR4, but you can get 8 (2x4) of 2400 for $46...

Newegg has 4gb for about $25, so there are options. Then you just have to figure out if this cheap unit has a slot for it, whether there is only a single DIMM slot and if the RAM it has is soldered or is 2x2gb or something ridiculous.

So yeah, totally doable if you're comfortable with it. As a tech guy I would try to avoid doing this for a friend or family member with a new laptop only because if anything ever went wrong with it in the next 5 years they'd bring it to me to fix because me adding that RAM must be the reason it's broken.... laugh out loud

I'd rather go for the single stick of 8GB ($350 deal) over this configuration. Its very hard to find a single stick of 4GB these days and you will end up paying close to $50 anyways to get either dual 4GB or a single 8GB of quality ram. Having a single stick of 8GB gives you a logical upgrade path to 16GB down the line vs being limited to 8GB if you added another 4GB. The UHD GPU on this is also too slow to really benefit from dual channel memory unlike the Xe on the i5/i7 versions.

Before posting, I didn't bother searching for 4, but on Amazon, I saw an 8GB for $36ish, and a 16GB for just over $50 (which I'm guessing you could get for $50 or less on sale). I'm pretty sure an earlier comment (or the specs?) say there's an empty slot on this particular laptop. So my thinking was, you could get to 8 for WELL under $50, or spend the more of the 50 and get 12 or 20. I happen to have a spare 4GB at home, waiting for a slot I can put it in (swapped it for an 8 on an earlier purchase)

First part, see above. 2nd part: Yes, upgrading RAM is not for everyone, although it's generally far easier than even a Hard drive (have to transfer the data) or wifi card (drivers) let alone, say, upgrading a CPU (possibly tools, thermal paste, etc). But I do understand the fear of being tech support and/or (for others) the fear of breaking something, if you're afraid to open the computer. If you're going to upgrade something, though, RAM is an easy place to start -- IF it's upgradeable (as I understand it is, in this case).

Because it's still plenty for the vast majority of people. Both my PC's are old and have older i3's. Both have "only" 4GB's of RAM as well, and I have zero problems with either. And I run processor heavy music recording software, VST's, etc., on both. The average person doesn't need nearly the processing power and RAM as I do.. and still 4GB is enough for me, and more than enough for them. That's way it's still legal Wink
