My biggest gripe would be the CPU, which is pretty weak and is on par with i5-8250U from 3 generations ago.

Most people don't need an i5 (unless you do video editing or 3d rendering). This machine is clearly not marketed to that audience.

When you compare the i3 vs the latest i5 on single core performance (web browsing, streaming, productivity apps) they are basically a toss-up meaning it won't matter for most people. When you compare the i3 vs the i5 you mentioned, the i3 actually wins on single core performance anywhere from 35-51% better.
