This receiver should be at least "good enough" for most uses -- I looked into this one a couple years ago and ended up passing on it at the time. At $299, the price isn't bad at all, but do keep in mind this is an older (3-4 years old) receiver, and I believe even then this was their "entry level" model.

I would personally recommend the Costco deal on the Yamaha if it ever comes back, or looking into something newer or more advanced if you feel you would want to take advantage of those features at all in the near future. With that said, the DH790 was decent from what I saw.

A few of the "limitations" (which shouldn't affect 90% of the people):
* 4 HDMI In, 1 HDMI Out (not bad!), 4x RCA (Red/White) inputs, 1 Optical, 1 Coax input.. If you have any older devices (Component or DVI) or newer (HDMI 120fps), or multiple Optical/Coax devices, you won't have inputs/outputs for those, but these are specialty uses.
* 2x Banana Plug outputs for speakers, the other 5 are just spring clips. Not a big deal, but nice to have all banana plugs.
* No networking features from what I can tell (again, probably not a big deal for most, as long as you have another device to run these features through)

My reason for going to another model:
* This allows for Atmos 5.1.2 (5 surround + 2 overhead) or 7.1 (7 surround); Some models like the Yamaha let you connect 7.1.2 (7 surround + 2 overhead) and swap between which you want to use, without needing to swap wires.. You can watch a Blu-Ray in 7.1 surround (the overheads will remain off) and then pop in an Xbox game and it will play in 5.1.2 (the surround rears will turn off and the overheads will turn on), this is nice but again only if you have the speakers.

It definitely felt "budget", but it checked off most boxes (4k, HDR, HDMI In, Atmos, etc..), I just think there are (or at least "have been".. I know times are different) options out there.

As for speakers.. For this I would recommend the SONY CORE series (when they're on sale for 50% off), except for the Subwoofer (which is terrible) and the Center channel could be better, so maybe look off-brand for both of those.

This is the power of CEC, which most home theater devices can do to cross communicate.

That said, CEC is still after all these years a bit hit-or-miss between manufacturers - sticking to a single brand helps with a consistent experience as you have noticed.

Just an FYI to anyone wondering what the interoperability you were talking about was.

That's really going to depend on what you want to do. I have a few different brands in my home theater setup. Best bet is to go somewhere and listen to the speakers before you buy them.

Jamo are decent budget friendly speakers.

This price is for brand new and is $150 off the original price for just today only.

I personally bought this receiver for $369.99 open box deal. Normally this receiver was $449.99 on Best Buy. The receiver is really good if you're looking for a 4K receiver.. This is only my second post, so take it easy guys!

Can you link the original post? I searched and couldn't find it. The last post was also by me but has expired so I created a new one.

I seen multiple posts but they are merged now. Probably seen your last post with it. Apologies for the confusion!

According to Amazon, this receiver was released in 2018. Is this correct?

Reviews are mentioning issues with HDR. Is this user error or is there an actual problem with the receiver?

Didn't realize at the time I purchased a Sony stereo, that both my tv and Blu Ray are also Sony.

I purchased each one based on deals and reviews at the time and wasn't thinking about interoperability.

Turns out there is good interoperability…..power up the Blu ray and the tv/stereo automatically switch to the Blu ray…no need to change inputs. Shut off the Blu ray and it automatically goes back to regular tv watching. Seamless switching.

It's not something I would have thought of ahead of time but glad that it works that way now, for whatever that is worth.

I read it's not as good as Denon / Marantz. "Poor room correction"
Also not sure if it has the fixed HDMI 2.1 fixed
