Out of thousands of games played across my long life, this is in my Top 5 easily. Buy it, don't rush it, enjoy the moment. It's amazing.
You will miss out if you skip playing, and its a lot of fun playing and uncovering the narrative and developing your character's skills. You could go the 'Cliff Notes' method and just watch several dozen hours of playthroughs on Youtube and get the plot elements that way -- but then you'd miss out on some really satisfying melee action vs robot dinosaurs. 5 years later, there are still some memorable moments in Horizon Zero Dawn. I've played it 3 times 2 on Playstation and once on PC.
While I'm sure you can, this game gave a back story of the main character, how she got her powers, and some good insight on the other characters as well (enemies included). I just played it recently and really enjoyed it. Although since I don't know much of anything about the new one, I can't directly answer the question, only that I can recommend this game.

Can someone tell me if I can skip playing this game and jump straight to Forbidden West or will I miss out?

Forbidden West does cover some of that when you first play the game. But you will end up struggling through most of the game not knowing the characters or the full story.

Zero Dawn, is a really good game. If you want to rush through it you could play it on Story Mode. Which you should have no issue running through if you want to grind it out fast to play Forbidden West.

It is more fun when it is at least on normal challenge. You can also play only the main story quests. The side quests are fun and challenging. But will slow you down if you just want to get through it.

I tried playing this game when it first came out and just really couldn't get into it at all. I'm into very story driven games also when I believe this is.

Not sure why since it's beloved.

Top games I love

All MGS series ( didn't love the last one due to limited story. Guns of the patriots was a joy)
FF7
Last of us 1
All Zelda's
GOW

Honestly one of the best games I have ever played. Excellent game plot, play, controls, superb graphics and wonderful music & background sounds. Try and play it with 5.1 channel sound system, its just awesome. Cant wait to play Forbidden west!

I liked GOW as well. It was fun. HZD I would definitely put 3 spots higher than GOW

Usually the case, I got lucky with a preorder for Tony hawk 1 + 2 xbox series x for $10 that was the full game not an upgrade.

Didn't they give it away for free some time ago? I have it in my library. Never bought it.

Same here. I'm surprised I have it in my library. I must have taken advantage of their free offer. I don't remember when.
