Just spent 460 on the Vizio m6. Bought this one and may take the m6 back. Is this one on par with the m6? I think FireTV is better than Vizio's crap but as far as picture quality... Am I going to notice a difference?

On paper, its specs match up almost exactly with M6. Contrast and black levels should be nearly indistinguishable between the two. However, the Insignia is brighter. M6 also has upscaling issues and some of the worst viewing angles. The one known issue with the Insignia is poor color accuracy out of box so needs a bit of fiddling with settings. Rtings has bought the Insignia for review but has not tested it quite yet, but personally I would take it over M6 easily, particularly if you like the Fire OS better. But if you have both, you can compare directly and keep the one you think looks best. FWIW, Consumer Reports does give Insignia higher marks for reliability based on their surveys (Insignia at the top with Sony, Vizio down with Element and Westinghouse).

I am not sure if they were ever made by Hisense. There is a lot of misinformation and assumptions on the Insignia. Current OEM for most Insignia TVs is TPV. TPV makes Philips TVs globally except in US/Canada (and they are better TVs then the philips stuff we have here). Philips also transferred the audio division (Fidelio, etc) to TPV after Gibson went belly up. TPV is by far the largest producer of computer monitors in the world (they OEM for many companies, self-market under their AOC, Agon, and Envision brands). Most of the insignia stuff is coming out of their factory in Mexico (factory ID TSCEM) or out of the one in Thailand.

This can easily be confirmed by looking at the manufacturing tag at the back of the TVs. Hisense has no factory in Thailand. The factory ID on the Mexico models is actually right on the label. TSCEM is the abbreviation for Trend Smart CE Mexico, which is the name of TPV's factory in Mexico.

People assumed since Hisense was making the Toshiba Fire TVs, that Hisense made all the Fire TVs and that is not the case. TCL is now the OEM for the Amazon branded TVs, TPV makes Insignia, and of course Hisense makes the aforementioned Toshiba.

The Philips TVs in US/Canada are made by Funai and are not comparable to the Philips TVs made by TPV for the rest of the world.

My Insignia 55" from 2015 was made by Hisense. Pulled it apart to see if I could fix it after the back lighting went. It had Hisense labels parts.

Funai also sells under Sanyo.

Insignia TV used to my go to brand for dumb TVs since 2012. No issues with them, with the exception of the 2015 model that went out last year.

I now go with with Philips/Magnavox Roku TVs. The Philips ones sold vis Sam's Club, come with 3 year warranties. I just buy budget TVs and each new one I buy offer a better picture and features than prior models purchased.

That doesn't surprise me, these store brands will change OEMs every few years. I know since at least the 2019 which I believe is when Insignia introduced their Fire TV line, Insignia has been with TPV. Thus why I wasn't sure if Hisense made them before then. Further back they had a few models made by Samsung, but Samsung has largely left the OEM game behind.

Of course all the TV manufacturers share parts these days. Someone tore apart one of the current Insignia's made by TPV and the boards were sourced from Samsung and the panel from CSOT. Everything is commoditized so the TV manufacturers will buy whatever from whoever to meet a spec and a price point. Unless you are buying OLED, which are sole sourced panels from LGD until QD-OLED starts coming out, the LCD panels in any TV can come from any of about 6-7 companies. Samsung is known to source panels from three different companies in the same exact model. They are not alone in this as its all about preserving margins and keeping the supply chain stable.
