Patagonia's usual semi-annual sale. there are good deal to be found, but not 50% off like in years past (although it has probably been awhile since), and unfortunately many sizes and colors are already OOS.
Mountain Hardware has been really good value.

At this point I think these top brands are pretty interchangeable. Buy whatever is cheap and you like.

I have gotten crap Arcteryx that has cost twice as more.

Patagonia is a favorite because they have the best no hassle warranty. The North Face makes you jump through some hoops to get anything done.

A few good deals. Very color and size dependant.

Don't expect any of the usuals on sale (black, navy, etc)

I recently got the nano puff vest and jacket, would give both a 10/10.

FWIW - the Retro-X has a windoroof laminate on the inside that makes it not as soft as a typical fleece.

Depends. What's the intended activity and season?

As an aside: for anyone with shorter arms like me who finds Patagonia's arms slightly long, check out Outdoor Research which is known for having slightly shorter arms than other major brands.

I was pretty stoked when I saw about five different pieces that I've had my eye on that all went on sale. Then I clicked on them, and zero Size M in stock. Alas.

Are these sales announced before hand? Do they start out with all colors and sizes in stock? Would be nice to get ahead of this next time around.

Agreed. I've got stuff from all the usual brands (Patagonia, TNF, Arc, Mtn Hardware, REI, OR...). Another brand I like is Outdoor Research, which is having its own winter sale now too.
I mainly look at the product type/category and the material used as well as the cut/fit of the item. Most outdoor apparel brands have similar product lines (waterproof breathable, hard shell, softshell, fleece, synthetic fill, down fill, air permeable synthetic insulation etc etc) and use materials from large suppliers like Gore, Polartec, Primaloft although many are also using their own versions of such.

Patagonia warranty and service, especially if you're near a retail location, is great. I walked in and dropped off an R1 that was a few years old that got a hole and they shipped off it for repair (took a couple of months). They'll also do small repairs on site.

I got a postcard informing me of such; it came a few days ago, but the sale officially starts tomorrow, 2/22. But this morning I also got an email telling me of an early start online, I'm not sure if retail locations have started the sale early too.

Having shopped at Patagonia for over a decade, I've come to anticipate their semi annual sales-- winter sale is usually mid Feb and summer is I think sometime late August (I don't pay attention to the summer sale as much). But most retailers hold similar sales--essentially end of season sales. As such, stock is pretty much what's on hand/leftover. Also, on sale are discontinued colors--standard colors (black, navy, blue, etc) are often not discounted as much or at all--or older styles although updates may not be huge from season to season (and in fact prior seasons may be better due to an undesired change in fit, materials, features, etc--i have capilene baselayers from as old as 2007 and they've been updated so many times over the years). I think stock this season may have been worse due to supply chain issues. Even during the holidays, I couldn't buy various items (Black Hole duffel or R1 daily) at full prices at their stores.

best to hit the sale early as items sell out (some of the items I had in my cart only showed a few remaining). also, you might have some better selection at their b&m retail locations. and their outlet locations may also have additional sales too

Seems like everything that I want is in some dual color combinations that makes me feel like it is 1993 again.
