I had to remind myself what cards were even in Strixhaven as it was a huge dud of a set outside of Mysical Archives. Note you have zero chance of pulling JP alt art MA cards from draft boosters, so these bundles are a complete waste of money. Even if you pulled the best card from the set FOUR TIMES you'd still only break even in money spent. DO NOT BUY THIS PERIOD.

I've got to say. As someone who used to play MTG in the 90s and recently just had played my first game in three decades, I appreciate how deep you guys just went into the value of this set. Gotta love MTG fans.

very annoyed to find out that you can't use your point reward coupons on sale items, even though sale items aren't on the list of restrictions for this...thankfully CS chat was able to refund the points:

This reward is redeemable online only at www.GameStop.com or through the GameStop app and valid toward the purchase of one single in-stock item only. Discount awarded on most expensive item. Cannot be used on GameStop gift cards, 3rd party gift cards, select downloadable content, Pro membership, or reservations. Other exclusions may apply. Two Rewards of the same denomination cannot be used in the same transaction. No cash back. No refunds. Used coupons will not be returned.

a fine deal otherwise!

Also the AFR collector boosters are a good deal at $12.66 each shipped. That's the equivalent of a box at $150, which is a good deal.

Not a lot going on with the AFR set as far as decent cards.

A warning to people on the overall deal, too. MTG Stocks may be high on it, but Dawnglare has a much lower valuation. They're closer to $2.20 per pack or $22 for this box of 10 (TCG Mid valuation -- it's super low at TCG Low). Dawnglare does toss out cards lower than a certain amount ($1.5 I think) and perhaps doesn't account for any variant card you get. Even then, you are really rolling the dice that these hit

OK, so Dawnglare's Set EV says it's $85.68 at TCG Mid. I can only see a small price tracker window for the past month, but it seems to be trending up now.

$85.68 draft booster box / 36 packs per box = $2.38 EV per pack * 30 packs if you buy 3 bundles = $71.40 EV from $65.96 (pretax) purchase. Additionally, a non-foil Archmage Emeritus is a $2.24 card, and you get one guaranteed foil promo per bundle, so 71.40 + (2.24 *3) = $78.12, and even with the $78.12 we're still ignoring the foil lands.

So I dunno. I never marketed this as a screaming deal in the opening post either. If you just want random Strixhaven cards for whatever reason, this gamestop pricing/promotion seems to be one of the more cost-effective ways to get random Strixhaven cards.

I mean, OK. I think most people would agree that Throne of Eldraine was a pushed set, powerlevel wise (Oko, BoneCrusher, Brazen Borrower, Great Henge, Kenrith, Emry, Mystic Sanctuary, etc). At TCG Mid, Dawnglare Set EV estimates Eldraine to be valued at $82.11 whereas Strixhaven is valued at $85.68. I mean, I'm just one person. I didn't decide that a Strixhaven booster box has a greater estimated value than a booster box of Eldraine, but that's how it is.

That being said, I get it. Some sets don't really appeal to people for one reason or the other. I didn't personally like Ikoria and its focus on mutate (for every single color identity) as a bad Voltron-y strategy, even though people hated bestow for pretty much the same reason back in the Theros block, but people seem to disagree and really liked the set for whatever reason. More power to them if they liked it, though.

I don't believe I ever advertised that the bundles could get you JP alternate art Mystical Archive cards, and I'm sure you'd pay a lot more than ~$2.20 per pack to import Japanese Strixhaven boosters to the US, probably erasing any potential "profit" you'd get from getting the JP alt-art Mystical Archive cards... That being said, that Strixhaven even has a Mystical Archive card included in regular draft boosters is just a huge plus over other standard sets, in my opinion, since that got a lot of needed reprints into circulation. Yeah, the prices for those reprints are lower now, _because_ of those reprints, but (many) of those cards were in demand for one format or another and over time, after Strixhaven goes out of print, those staples will creep back up in value.

I'm not even sure exactly where to start in this logical fallacy, so I'll just ignore it and move on. I'll just say that some people just like opening packs, and this is one of the more cost-effective ways to just open packs for MTG, and MTG doesn't usually have sales like this where boosters can be gotten for ~$2.20 each pre-tax. This isn't some kind of scam, and this GameStop promotion didn't break into your home, and kill your dog, and you've been oddly very upset at this optional deal.

Good question. Will cardboard be a commodity in 2032?

Dud in terms of "value" maybe, but this set was super fun to draft (which is what draft boosters are for, believe it or not!)

Also as a guy who played in the 90s - is this a good purchase if I buy 3 so that my two kids and I can each build a deck to play against each other? Is there enough to form a decent-enough starter deck?

I have a few hundred cards from ~ 1995 but I don't think I should integrate them into these new ones. Is that right?

As someone else who played in the 90s, do those old cards hold any value? Or are they obsolete given the enormous changes to the game in the subsequent decades?

Depends on the card and set. Anything on the reserve list is valuable to some degree, if only a few dollars. Alpha/Beta are the real money makers (black border) as they were small print runs and supply of mint cards is running dry. Even played cards will have some value so it's worth investigating online if you have any of those.
