I second this. Not only does it make great alcoholic drinks, I've subbed extra virgin mixer for the liquor for kids at parties. Never using a blender again for frozen drinks

It's not really a powerful blender however it has blades that shave the ice before it goes into blender so it makes great frozen drinks.

So basically the main purpose this serves is shaved ice...now I am curious if there is any setting or is it possible to shave ice using Blendtec. I am not discounting the purpose of this machine in anyway, but getting another appliance occupying so much of space is the last thing on my mind.

This is an entirely different machine / setup. You put the ice in the top where there is a rotor with sharp blades. You put your mix and other ingredients in the main blender part on the bottom. When you run the machine, it shaves the ice (from the top) down into the blender, and then blends the shaved ice with the wet and dry ingredients in the blender. That's why this works so well even though it's not nearly as powerful as a Blendtec or Vitamix -- it doesn't need to be powerful because the blades on the top component are doing the hard work.

You can pulverize ice blenders like the Blendtec, but you won't get the real, extremely thinly shaved ice like these would. This link does indicate that the Blendtec can make something like shaved ice [blendtec.com], but still wouldn't expect it to be the real shaved ice texture you'll get from one of these units. To your point on counter space, these are not small units so you should definitely take that into account, and if the Blendtec recipe linked above gets you close enough to what you want it may be better to just stick with that if you already have one.
