I've always been afraid to have dual function tech like this. If it bricks you are out of both a modem and a router, and I find myself upgrading to different routers every few years as my wifi house demands increase.
I guess if you rent a modem through your provider and love this brand, I can see the value in it.

What router and modem would you recommend to get same or better performance at around same cost?

Personally I'm always ok using the standard issue spectrum modem especially since they don't charge for it anymore with an Internet package, but your provider may or may not do the same. Others with more experience with modems could recommend alternatives better than I can.
As for routers, I have used a refurbished Orbi RBR43 that came with 2 satellites for two years now and it's the best router I've ever had. Previous routers would have dead spots in my bedrooms located furthest away.
It was $220 bucks at the time, with 90 days to return if it wasn't working for me. Well worth it to have almost zero wifi issues with over 20 devices connected to it (phones, TVs, security cameras, echo dots, streaming boxes).
Here's the link for the current one I have but they have newer, more powerful models available depending on your needs. This one has handled everything I've thrown at it:

Spectrum doesn't charge for their modem. They do charge a monthly fee if you use a router they provide.

That is an old AC router. Don't buy it. Also never buy a dual band mesh router system if you can't run a wire between the nodes.
