TL;DR Windscribe is a VPN service. 30GB is per month
Sigh, I spent quite a few minute just to figure out: what on earth is "Windscribe"? (SD should include a brief introduction for such non-popular website rather than merely saying it is cheap). In the end, I found out it is just a VPN service provider: "We aim to develop easy to use yet powerful tools, that allow anyone to circumvent censorship, access geographically restricted content, and minimize their exposure to marketers, criminals and surveillance dragnets. Let's bring back the Internet as it was meant to be."
The access of free account seems limited compared to paid one: https://windscribe.com/upgrade (pull down the webpage to the comparison table at the bottom)

I bought a lifetime sub back when they were really small (small enough that a lifetime subscription was a risk) and that has paid for itself 100x. Days like today I feel a bit guilty not contributing to support them, but I do recommend them to friends strongly.
Good things about them - as a VPN they clearly take the goal of having a VPN, privacy, very seriously. And actually care, not only as an advertising gimmick. It should be a given, but obviously these days there are a lot of behind the scenes pressures put on anything like this to give in for "good reasons" like law enforcement. Anywhere you buy VPN service from you end up having to blindly trust to resist those pressures, unfortunately. But things like providing a completely open source VPN client kinda helps with earning my trust. It's not like most people give a shit or can even understand the code, so it's obviously not a big selling point. But even if you can't read the code, you should know that having an open source client is a hallmark of taking security seriously.
As for downsides, I haven't used competitors in a few years but when I did the competition had a larger selection of locations and higher speeds sometimes. Not sure if that's still true, probably is still for locations but probably not the speeds, I never have issues with bandwidth using them. In the past they were slow at fixing problems when discovered, but they would always clearly be working hard on fixing things the right way rather than the quick way. Some features have taken a long time to be released/updated, but network and security problems were clearly dealt with as an emergency. The last year they've added a bunch of features that are amazing and, again, clearly designed to make the service great for even the niche users. For example I use a (free for pro) feature that creates a temporary port that I can use to connect network services (e.g. FTP) through without exposing my IP. They offer for an additional monthly cost a static IP where you can reserve a permanent port number. It can be clunky to use a temporary port, but when I looked into the details more I realized that realistically this is the only way to solve the need for port forwarding without unintentionally sacrificing anonymity. They could have simply not allowed any port forwarding or have gone the lazy way and allow binding your account to a permanent port, but instead they do it the right way with real privacy in mind.
Also, naturally as they've gotten bigger they've gotten much faster at fixing issues when they happen.
Also they write funny posts with serious topics. I've seen people complain they're cringey / 'hello fellow kids' kinda... and yeah, they are, but they're obviously aware of that and play into it too. The jokes and puns are definitely eye rolling, but hell I'd rather have that than the cold corporate husks or complete lack of communication from "big" VPNs
Here's a recent blog they posed that was news to me and does not bode well for VPNs and privacy: https://blog.windscribe
Ok that is a lot of shilling for them so I'll call it. Hopefully the shilling will relieve some of my guilt for not giving them more money lol

I imagine this is just a one time 30gb limit increase and once it's gone it's gone.
