This is perhaps the most powerful set available from Snap Circuits. The programmable fan isn't even the most fantastic part of the kit. The Arcade Controller is also a PICAXE microcontroller akin to an Arduino (PICAXE is an earlier development that, much like Arduino, was intended as a low-cost alternative to the BASIC Stamp). The Arcade Controller is already pre-loaded with applications for the set with which it is included, but a $20 PICAXE programming cable is the only thing separating you from reprogramming the controller for other purposes. And if you need some ideas, look no further than the SnapMicro kits which Snap Circuits used to sell with a PICAXE controller. Those include programs and sample circuits. The SnapMicro sets have been discontinued. with Snapino sets that include an Arduino being the modern option. However, I consider the instruction manuals for the older SnapMicro sets to include a better variety of projects which show the possibilities of what can be done with a microcontroller.

I've attached details from Snap Circuits on the internals of the Arcade Controller as well as projects for the two discontinued SnapMicro sets.

Good luck!
Jon

You have to click on View Forum Thread to see a post's attachments. Why on earth Slickdeals uses this goofy hybrid system, I have no idea.

You also need to see the desktop version of the webpage. If your on your phone, it doesn't display them. If on chrome, click the three dots on the top right of your screen and click on "Desktop site."

I can totally relate. This price is about $2 below what I paid for the set six years ago and I had to talk myself down from buying another set(!). Of course, I should note that in my house we were building projects from Snap Circuits Illumination over dinner just last night.

Good luck!

I bought a set of these thinking I was buying a open ended circuit building system for my kids. What I found was there was a set of instructions that would appropriately setup the circuits they had created and they work well. However, there is no documentation about many of the "black box" modules and thus you are extremely limited in creating your own circuits. For someone who is trying to teach kids how to build circuits, I would not recommend. For someone who wants a step by step guide on rails, this works well.

I have this and the larger complete set as well. Did these with my daughter when she was 5 to 8. I wouldn't say these help teach electric circuits. It is very STEM, but more about reading relatively complicated (for young children) diagrams and following instructions. The underlying circuit stuff is really buried in the modules themselves. This is a great way to start with circuits, but honestly, I didn't learn any more about circuits than I already did, which is pretty limited. Easy stuff is there, with parallel / series circuits and then how capacitors work and being able to watch how it charges, discharges.

It is well built and I definitely recommend it.

Also at Walmart same price
And target will price match amazon
Target didn't have this, but you can also price match at Microcenter, available for shipping if not stores nearby, but it's more laborious since the process requires a phone call.
