Good, yes. I'd go as far as to say they're better for gaming than the 6xx.

With that said, they make the 6xx sound exciting and that's hard to do. These are extremely neutral. They're a bit harsh on the top end for me but they're still great. I used them as my main set until I got Focal Clears. Now I use them with my PS5.

Edit: As for open vs closed back, open back is better for gaming. Much wider soundstage, less overpowering bass usually. Better for footsteps, vocals, etc. However sound leakage is a consideration. It's not enough to transmit through a mic(I've tested dynamic and condenser) but it is noticeable to others in a room with you.
Fine for gaming but these are open-back, so everyone around will hear everything you hear almost as clearly
What are you doing to your headphones? I've had my 598 for 5 years now, and they have the same exact connector from the looks of it. I've dropped these more times than I can count from desk height, and the same cord is still going strong.

Also the replacement cable, should you ever need one, is $10 on amazon. That isn't expensive, and the stock ones are durable as hell from my experience.

Definitely not lol. These headphones are really really good, and in some ways better than a lot of headphones sub $500 or even more. Great for gaming if you can drive them, and still the best jazz headphones I've heard to this point between these and the Focal Clears I'd say
You're exaggerating. I have a friend with the HD560s and have quite a bit of time on them. I own the AKG K712 Pro, Senn HD598se & HD6xx, and Focal Elex. The K712 Pro for jazz stomps my other headphones and the HD560s. The 560s are amazing for their price but they're a jack of all trades and master of none. If you can only afford one set of headphones under $200 then they're a great choice, if not the best choice. They have their betters and as being a jack of all trades means they are not the best at one particular use.

Out of my 4 headphones the HD6xx are the weakest in gaming. Amazing headphones for music but gaming they are very meh.

Yes, in fact you can use HD 598 or 599 cables in the HD 560S (I use my short HD 599 cable in my HD 560S for walks around the neighborhood), that one cable has survived two headphones for years. Key to cable longevity is to not stuff it in a pocket or run it over with an office chair… also don't rage quit 😆

So question, I have a Soundblaster Z-SE sound card. I am looking for good all around headphones that I can do some gaming on and music listening to. Now the caveat here is that I like a little bass with my sounds.

I normally game on my Vizio M51 for surround in most PC /PS4 games except for RTS games which I play on my desktop to my Kilpsch 2.1 Pro Media THX

Suffice it to say I'm not a heavy headphone user unless people around me need me to be quiet. I don't like things on me ear or inside my ear lol so even with my earbuds i only wear one at a time most times.

I am no audiophile but I appreciate decent sound. Any recommendations? I had a HD 555 in the past and honestly wasn't impressed by any of it. And I found it annoying everyone could hear everything. Though that was a concern mainly wearing it in public. Which I won't be using the new headphone for so I think I'll be fine with open cans again.

get the beyerdynamic Tygr 300R . this bad boy can definitely game and has bass. its perfect imo if you can get past the fact that the cord is non-removable.

The HD598 has a larger soundstage and imaging is a wash. The HD560s are better with clarity and detail. They are more neutral than the others, but they are not better at everything. It also depends on the usage and sound signature preference you're looking for.
My comparison was to the HD58x/H6xx not the HD598

There are alot of little issues with the HD560s that make it far from the best headphone

One I forgot to mention is the twist lock cable

On HD58x/H6XX if the headphones become tangled / trip / snag - the connectors will come loose from either ear cup.

On this HD560s the cable will snag and either damage the input hole or destroy the cable.

Another problem (or could be a pro) is that the cable is 10 ft long instead of the 6 ft long cable found on the aforementioned models.

Sennheiser does NOT sell a shorter cable and the shorter cable available online (Amazon/other stores) is not the same impedance and destroy the sound signature changing the sound significantly

I remember my K712 pro days. Felt like i was in a movie theater when using them ...lacking bass but that soundstage oh man crazy. I dont think ive found a headphone with a wider soundstage than those. Even My DT1990 they do come close but not quite there

The bass was pretty weak with my Soundblasterx G6. The K712 were the first ones to make me feel I was missing something with the G6 amp. I bought the Schiit Asgard 3 and that did help out the bass and overall sound. They're still not bass heavy and I have to jack up the bass in EQ but they aren't anemic in bass like they were before. The soundstage is absolutely amazing. They are my gaming headphones and are beasts with jazz, orchestras, and musicals.

Are these worth the ~$150 to upgrade from HD558's or just keep saving and wait for a sale on 600's or 660's?
Mostly listen connected to a Scarlett 2i2 second gen.

How does it compare to the HD 560S and Philips X2/27 Fidelio Headphones people mentioned here?

The 560s and 660s are so close in sound signature and performance that it wouldn't be worth it. The 560s/660s are very neutral and the 600 has a much different sound signature. It'd depend on what you plan to use them for and what genres of music you listen to. Also, you should upgrade your amp. It only does 24 mW into a low 32 ohm. Even something like the Fiio E10k would be an upgrade, but for the HD600 you'd have to look at something more powerful.

Appreciate it, mostly hip-hop, Motown, and Rock. Have my reference headphones as well. Really hoping my next upgrades will be my final level and won't go hardcore audiophile fiendish.

And yeah the Scarlett 2i2 is starting to show it's age, planning to start looking into a similar mic/headphone "DAC/amp" that should be able to handle at least HD600 if not better headphones without needing to buy an additional amp as well.

For those with experience with different Sennheiser open-backs, are the HD599s, a better deal for only $6 more?

Thanks in advance.
Probably not, the 599's have a prominent mid bass hump that is an eyesore for me.

This is the problem with audiophile headphones. You'll find that some work great for some genres and not so much on others. The Sennheiser HD6xx work great, when EQ'd for rock and doesn't need EQ for Motown. I have them and they're wonderful. Hip-hop though? Nah. This is why I have 4 pairs of headphones.

For hip-hop in the budgeted range I would suggest the Phillips Fidelio X2HR or the Beyerdynamics DT990 Pro. For a jack of all trades for those genres you might think about the Hifiman Sundara. They'd be great for rock and good for Motown and hip hop. It just wouldn't have a deep hitting bass of the the two hip hop headphones I suggested or the sultry smooth sounds of the HD6xx but they're a great set of headphones.
