Mind you, I think this drive was a similar price a couple years ago, I wish prices were going down, but .. they don't seem to be for now. From this point forward it's a question whether inflation will outpace innovation or not.
Personally, I have a failed Seagate 3TB drive sitting in front of me where I lost my old research code which a local data recovery company gave up even when I offered them $1k to recover it. $90 for 5TB is just a fair price and I definitely wouldn't consider giving it to Seagate to lose my data.
Sadly inflation at core is based on energy prices, so yes, inflation will outpace innovation. Given the eco-fascists went as far as trying to make us eat fake meat to cut down on cow farts, we are going to have a lot of stupid policies that does a lot of harm for a little perceived good in the next 3 years. Wake more people up and stop the political correctness madness!
Hard drives don't like to be dropped and shipping isn't always gentle hence half of drives failing. traveling it will kill spinning drives.
This COSTCO Seagate isn't really a good deal. You can get $44 WD 4TB drives at WD eBay. Got one, usually 50 left.

Portable hard drives have their place just as desktop hard drives do. Trying to compare the two is an apples to oranges comparison.
For a portable hard drive, retail 5TB drives have for the past few years fallen into the $79 to $90 range when on sale at Best Buy, Costco and similar retail stores.

2.5" mechanical drives are now stuck in an awkward place because people either pay more for a SSD (speed, reliably, heat+noise) or pay less for a 3.5" HDD when they are shooting for 10TB and more or RAID them for redundancies and they can afford to put the drives in a protected environment. Their market segment is being squeezed by both sides. There's little reason to pay the premium for these 2.5" mechanicals unless you are using those expensive NAS that takes 2.5" drives yet you are not ready to shell out more for SSDs.

Link? Otherwise I call bs. The cheapest I just saw at the WD ebay store is $62.99 and that's for a REFURB POWERED 4gb hd(I prefer portable hd's).
also, just saw one of the many negative reviews:
Seller is a crook. He canceled my order and then re-listed the item for $40 more than what I had paid. I contacted Western Digital and was told this seller is an imposter. "WD" is NOT affiliated with the Western Digital company. There's no telling what these USED hard drives have been through, what kind of illegal activities they may have been used for. BUYER BEWARE!!!!
