In order to convert a TM-AC1900 to a Asus RT-AC68U you had to enable SSH (Secure Shell Protocol) on the router. With SSH enabled you could then install the Asus bootloader (cfe) and the firmware (or an alternative variant, e.g. Merlin ). Unfortunately, only the initial firmware for the TM-AC1900 allowed SSH to be enabled; later versions removed this feature. Consequently, you had to downgrade the firmware on the TM-AC1900.

I have converted 4 TM-AC1900s to RT-AC68Us. One of the TM-AC1900s came with the original firmware and made for an easier conversion.

For all the gory details on how to do this see https://www.bayareatechpros.com/ac1900-to-ac68u/. Of the 24 steps in this procedure, the 1st 10 lead to enabling SSH.

I have 2 of these blue caves, set up via the Aimesh for expanded coverage in my 3 story home. Has been working flawlessly for the last 2 years with no issues whatsoever. Love the boxy shape and can be blended perfectly in any setup because you don't have crazy antennas poking out.

I have Fios with Gigabit connections speeds and via WIFI I get 600mbps uploads and downloads, which isn't the best, but for my wireless devices its perfect (my pc is wired so I get the full bandwidth)

4 gigabit ports, usb 3.0 port for cloud storage, super easy setup either via the app or router.asus.com. Cant complain about anything on this router!

Love the aesthetics of this, but I actually just recycled mine at Best Buy in favor of an AX86U. This is an oddball in the Asus lineup because it has an Intel wireless chip. It runs hot and hasn't received a firmware update in ages. I held onto my flashed AC68Us even though they're less capable spec-wise because they continue to receive firmware updates, run cooler and are just as (if not more) stable than the Blue Cave.

yes, that is how it should work. if you arent able to turn off DHCP on the att box and put it into "'bypass/pass thru' mode you may have to contact att to have them do it on their access side.

note that you will probably have to restart the att box and then turn on the new router.

If you're currently using a 'Gateway' (i.e. combination Modem / Router), you cannot replace it with just a Router; you'd have to either put your current Gateway into 'Bridge Mode' or replace your current Gateway with a separate Modem (and a separate Router).

Do yourself a huge favor and learn how to use GOOGLE for your research rather than trusting a random stranger on a forum to provide accurate information (ME INCLUDED! Wink )

Apartment I'm moving into is wired for FiOS.Any thoughts between this or the eero 6 which is essentially the same price?
Edit- will just be using Fios internet, not the TV.

I had this at home for a while and it's now in use at my in-laws.

It's pretty good, not amazing. Good at this price though.

It uses an intel/lantiq chipset which is very rare compared to the more common broadcom, qualcomm, and mediatek families

in terms of pure range, it would probably work better if it had traditional antenna placement.

if you're into asus aimesh with other routers, this firmware is a generation behind other current routers, which limits certain minor features. (their last update was 5/2021 so at least it's semi current).

the CPU seemed like it could get bogged when during my very brief attempts at using quality of service, like even 50mbps was a challenge. this was a short test.

But it works and the raw wifi performance is decent and it's cute. and this is a decent price.

hi, i'm in a apartment with Fios and was wondering if i could replace the Fios router with this and be able to get coverage for my entire apartment which isnt too big. i do not have TV service. is it correct that i need Verizon to turn on the ethernet to the ONT and then just connect this to the ONT via ethernet? thank you in advance

So i have a 3 floor home (with a basement so technically 4 floors). With one of these routers I was able to cover the basement and the second floor but the attic was spotty as well as my backyard. With the second router I easily got coverage in all areas.

Id say anything within about 80-100ft would connect fine. My 2.4gz connection at its furthest point gives me 80mbps up/down
