A factory blemished PEC cast iron square is your best bet if you want something approaching high squareness for less than $50

Not a bad price.. but per CCC this fluctuates quite a bit. $9.74 is the cheapest as of late (March 4th)

Lots of reviews saying this one isn't square. Any recommendations on a good quality square?

This is good for the price. If you're super concerned about squareness you'll need to get a proper machinist square and then adjust this one to be more square or use paper and pencil and draw lots of lines. The one I received was pretty damn square even against my DIN 875/0 squares though none of them are as long as this. Otherwise you can spend $100+ on a Starrett.

Looking at the pictures and the guy squaring the studs. Doesn't he know that the contractor before him didn't give a damn about the level/plumb?

Seriously, I don't have a single straight stud in my house. "Do your best and cauk the rest" was their mantra.

I agree, this is a great square for $10 just dont abuse it and it'll do good for most woodworkers. The price gap between a decent square and a perfect square is a huge gap

This is a good quality square and a very good price.
This, like most of these squares, can be tuned in. There are a ton of Youtube videos on how to do it.

Frankly, even if it were squared, I would want to confirm it.
Plus, you are going to have to learn how to tune it over time to keep it in square. So now is a good time to learn.

Pretty sure the people who built my house...washed out of the team building yours. EEK!

Some is not squared either.....But it gets better...
They tried to asphyxiate us with PVC on an HVAC where PVC should not be...(was about to melt through when I caught it.)
They did not mount the front post of the front door stair rails in cement...OH NO...they poured the cement, let it harden...then set the post on top...with about 3" of topsoil and the top of the stairs connection to keep them stable.
And what these people had against screws....... I must have spent $40-50 going around and putting screws in the many different things that were missing them. Cabinets...appliances...you name it.

You'll pay a little more but it's a one time investment (and it's square). I would recommend a blemished combination square. The only issue is cosmetics but they are square and only about twice the price of something from one of the big box stores.

Thanks for the info. I ordered a couple of these. Being able to replace the screw is a big deal.

I think the price fluctuates for all kinds of reasons. Something caused it to jump back up a few bucks.
