I used rechargeable AA batteries (either eneloops or the ikea ones) in clamshells and it worked fine. Given that this isn't a very long game even if they drain fairly quickly it doesn't really affect playing.
(If you have kids or buy toys, having those adapters on hand is always a good idea!)
