All 3 of these are overkill for a beginner guitar. Buy a (decent) used guitar for far less to learn on and figure out if it will just sit in a closet. Then upgrade.

Terrible advice. We depend on a healthy supply of closet guitars to stock the secondary market.

I agree. Don't let people who profit off new guitars tell you otherwise

Don't go ultra cheap on your first guitar. It'll feel like shit with sharp fret edges and rough, grindy frets, going out of tune, strings buzzing, etc. It'll sound meh, too. For just a little more there are lots of great guitars available.
  • Epiphone LP $399 in this deal
  • Epiphone ES 335 Pro $599
  • Epiphone Uptown Kat hollowbody w/ ebony fretboard $649
  • Classic Vibe Tele or Strat $459
  • Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster $499
  • Gretsch Electromatic Jet w/ Bigsby 5230T $629
  • LTD EC-256 les paul style $599

Some of these go on sale for less.

I have the Epiphone 335, J Mascis and a Gretsch Jet. I play them just as much as my Gibson Les Paul and American Deluxe Strat that each cost 3-4 times as much. We're very lucky to live in a time where such great guitars are available at these prices.

I have a rep at Guitar Center that gives me 10-20% off just by emailing him. If you want his contact info drop me a PM. I earn nothing from referrals, just love getting more people into music therapy.

Buy local!

Thanks! I did walk into a local music store and bought my kid a Fender guitar and glad I did since the personal service was great and even got 8 lessons in store. Good tip!

I highly recommend Ibanez Axion line. I've owned one with the S body and played the RGA and RGD. All flawless as far as I could tell. The specs are pretty close to $2k Prestige models. The finishes, QC, and frets are where the two lines diverge. The model listed here has Bare Knuckle Aftermath pickups which are great for modern metal and other heavy genres. Great price considering the market, and if it's your style it absolutely blows the fender player series out of the water.

If you're a beginner and want a fender without the price tag I'd recommend the higher end Squier models (classic vibe) or a G&L tribute. Definitely play before you buy and look for sharp fret ends and buzzing on the neck.
great guitar, would love to see a similar deal on the RGD variety with the extra inch in scale length
