This is better than any wifi6 router in its price range. BCM4906 4x4 AC W2 with 160mhz support on 5G.
2x2 AX routers at this price point are worse
I have this router and love it.
The RGB may seem dumb but in all honesty I find it quite handy. I have it to show bandwidth. With it setup in the living room I can see how many people are watching stuff/downloading. Color changes from Green to Yellow to Red on what is going on. I am stuck with 50/mbps(or pay 6x the price for 100+mbps) so it is quite handy and the QoS on it keeps everything good.
Great at port forwarding, no problems with a closed NAT in any games. As someone with a low amount of bandwidth and kids that game/youtube and I like my 4K shows it does a great job with the connection I have.
Add in the fact that you can use third party firmware on these to make them even better and you'll wonder why you were ever dealing with Spectrum's crap.
Just make sure you still have a modem, as it's possible you have a modem/router combo unit.

The benefit of the 4X4 will be handling more devices but not necessarily maximizing speeds or throughput. So a lot more beneficial for households with a lot of devices looking for airtime.
In short, is this AC2900 a significant downgrade from the AX58U in the range department?
Not sure which one so post the model next time.
You would be correct and not correct, cause even a 2x2 router if your looking at raw throughput will be higher or on par with the best AC has, at best max AC in all perfect conditions is around 600 Mbps (80MHz) and 900 Mbps (160MHz) from even the highest end AC router. When it comes to AX the lowest throughput, NOT ISP SPEED, will be starting around 500Mbps without any variables and has already proven in higher end gear to be as fast as 1.7 Gbps its late so I dont want to go search for it. The GT-AC2900 was and still is one of the fastest to push that 900Mbps on 160MHz but the problem is the second you get neighbors networks running 160MHz or other channel interference those speeds drop to the more common and average around 500Mbps.

Wifi 6E is nothing special cause in most cases the range is so short you leave the room and your back on standard wifi 6 AX.
Range in general is a giant ???? cause it depends on so many variables that its impossible without a site survey to give anyone a real answer. From reviews I saw on the GT-AC2900 it had problems with range after 30feet so I would say the AX58U is probably better than it cause of the 4th antenna.
While this is a good router, you would be wasting money buying a wifi 5 generation router this late in the game especially when good AX wifi 6 routers are around this price point. If you honestly dont need the latest and greatest and have speeds around 500Mbps from your ISP it would last you a few years.
That is correct, this is a very high end wifi 5 router.
You would be incorrect Wifi 6 AX range is not limited and is almost completely identical to Wifi 5 and AC, so there is no dropping down. What your confused with is Wifi 6E which operates on the new 6Ghz band and is very short range and once you leave the room the router in most cases will drop down to Wifi 6 AX.
