One of those things you don't realize you need until you need it, and the local hardware store only sells the tiny ones so you end up driving an hour each way to big box store.
Maybe for overhead or through the floor, but trying to drill through studs or joists spaced 16" on center with a 16" long bit will make for some awkward angles.
This would come in handy for drilling deep holes in a tree stump to help the chemicals reach further into the stump. There is even a question and answer on the Amazon page for this use.
The threaded cone at the front pulls the bit into whatever material you drill into so backing it out requires switching the drill to reverse. Kind of annoying when you're used to normal spade bits that you can move in/out freely.

For what its worth, I used to use the HFT 9.99 flex bit, but its head would break off when doing sistered or double joists most times. Then I found the Irwin 1891006 selling for around $25 both on Amazon and eBay and that has been the best find. Slightly larger 1/2" head than the HFT 1/4" bit though smaller than the one in the OP, at 6 ft length, it should meet most Romex running needs..
