-share anything large without concern if you ever get your media back. Small HD's and thumbdrives are great personal data storage devices but nothing is simpler or cheaper than handing a burnt disc to someone you might never see again.
-Survive moisture better
-Do not suddenly "corrupt" without warning
-discs do not spread viruses (not near as often)
-You do not have to worry about people highjacking your PC / data by putting their disc in your computer (again, it is possible but million times less likely)
-No need to worry about the umpteen possible file sharing options online (and their data breaches) when trying to transfer a file to someone less than tech knowledgeable.
-Ability to easily and cheaply create redundant backups
At least optical drives are fairly cheap.
But optical will still be around for years because:

times have changed where all the other points are either impractical (i can't think of anyone that wants files on a disc, and backing up files on a disc is a more involved manual process than backing up on a nas) or aren't worth worrying about (moisture/bitrot/malware - again, practice safe data backup and these issues can easily be overcome).
i do see the value, and optical drives will exist as an option, but it just isn't the future. if you have a use-case, great, but there's a reason why you don't see new laptops with optical drives anymore. i think some OEM desktops still come with optical drives, but i'd imagine most of those buyers don't use them either.
pc enthusiasts are already a rare breed, and optical drive enthusiasts are a rare breed among them.
