The legacy big box brands don't even compete in the Android head unit space. Legacy brands offer proprietary systems with Android Auto and CarPlay connectivity with presumably better sound quality and more audio-focused features. They're much simpler and just work. Probably the way to go for people who are more focused on sound quality and just want it to work with no fuss.
For several years now, there's been growing market for head units that run Android, for people who want to install apps in the head unit itself, customize the UI, or bring more modern infotainment type features into an older car. Most of these can interface with CANBUS and display vehicle stats/diagnostics, work as DVRs if you connect cameras, etc. ATOTO is among one of the popular brands, along with Joying, Xtron, Pumpkin, and a few others. They're Chinese brands, but the more known ones offer support and warranties. They're well suited for people that like to customize and play around with tech toys. At the same time, they can have bugs and glitches because they're basically a computer in the dash.

Take all that info and price shop on amazon or ebay. The crutchfield kits prices are only good when you buy the head unit from them as well, which I have also done several times. Regardless I would buy the master sheet from crutchfield, about $10 and a great help for wiring specific to your car.
