I bought my M1 256 GB from Walmart open box for $699 and it came factory sealed. Only real difference is the faster processor and the new LED technology on the display. Which you will not notice unless it is right next to the 2020 model. I do not think the difference would be worth $300

For future proofing/long term use I think it does. It may not be apparent for now, but as more apps and tech develops the M1 outpaces any of the older gen processors.

Hmm very tempting. Though the M1 one is probably worth the extra cost...but it's $900 for 128GB so hmm 🤔

I've had two of the M1's of these. The first one flew off the roof of the car after the kid left it up there and the one to replace it we got open box 256G for just $890 on eBay. I put Apple Care accidental coverage on it as soon as we got it lol.

I was lucky, they had an open box at my microcenter for a 256gb M1 12.9 pro for 929. Has Applecare until March 2023.

Most users won't notice a difference in performance between this and the M1; the biggest thing you'd be missing with this model is the mini LED display

Agree with this. M1 on this is an overkill. It's not even a true laptop where you actually need power and efficiency on programs. Most people would do just "light" productive work.
