Once it's applied to your account, you're good to go, no VPN needed.

It was my understanding that the vpn is for when you redeem the code with Microsoft

Yes. You just won't be able to convert for $1 anymore, you'll have to convert it from Gold to GPU for $14.99.

Every time I see one of these threads, somebody says this. I'm not saying it isn't possible, but I just find it highly unlikely. I've done this so many times before with Brazil keys from CDKeys, and even more recently with Turkey keys from Eneba (which I just checked there and are currently $30.45/yr.). I've never seen anybody in any of those threads that say they actually got banned.
