That means that for a $500 retail bike, the shop paid $350. Plus, recently they've had to pay $50 shipping for each bike, a charge which used to be waived for large orders but not anymore. After assembly, any ongoing free maintenance and customer service, they would be losing money if they gave a 20% discount and sold that bike for $400.
And that's not even including all the expenses to keep the doors open, like rent, salaries, insurance, utilities, advertising, etc.

MSR Guardian Purifier [rei.com] Can't justify the cost yet and would want to start with something cheaper, but if I were to go out often, I would look into this.
I just bought a pair of new hiking shoes off Salomon site directly (have 2 other older pairs, so pretty confident in sizing), but only 10% off (size was hit and miss when checking rei.com, and didn't have at local REI). So If they have your size and you need new shoes, could be a good deal.
