The current margin on the major bike shop brands is roughly 30%.

That means that for a $500 retail bike, the shop paid $350. Plus, recently they've had to pay $50 shipping for each bike, a charge which used to be waived for large orders but not anymore. After assembly, any ongoing free maintenance and customer service, they would be losing money if they gave a 20% discount and sold that bike for $400.

And that's not even including all the expenses to keep the doors open, like rent, salaries, insurance, utilities, advertising, etc.

Bicycles are pretty low margin (and getting worse) and have lots of related expense and labor. No legit retailer can afford to cut the price 20%.

The nicest one is made by Osprey and the cashier let me know that Osprey has a lifetime warranty so you can always return it to an REI, basically like you can with items bought before REI changed their lifetime warranty on everything to one year like 10 years ago. I was there exchanging a 17 year old belt for a replacement since I broke the plastic buckle last night. lol
