The current margin on the major bike shop brands is roughly 30%.

That means that for a $500 retail bike, the shop paid $350. Plus, recently they've had to pay $50 shipping for each bike, a charge which used to be waived for large orders but not anymore. After assembly, any ongoing free maintenance and customer service, they would be losing money if they gave a 20% discount and sold that bike for $400.

And that's not even including all the expenses to keep the doors open, like rent, salaries, insurance, utilities, advertising, etc.
Bicycles are pretty low margin (and getting worse) and have lots of related expense and labor. No legit retailer can afford to cut the price 20%.
The benefit and sweet spot, IMO, of the annual member 20% off coupons is looking for a piece of gear that has a solid MSRP (all the way across the board no matter where you look), and snagging it for 20% off at REI. There are restriction uses on the coupon, however you can find some incredible deals when this comes around. Well worth the cost of membership.

Looking for a carry on backpack. Anyone have a good suggestion from rei?
I have an Osprey Archeon 24 I got from REI, paid $150 in Nov 2021, that has been fantastic. I was a bit worried about how it opens but I don't mind it at all. It can fit my 17.7in diagonal,1in thick Dell laptop, iPad, and kindle in the laptop sleeve. Large, elastic side pockets for my water bottle, and a convienent top pocket for the stuff I need to easily access while on a plane.

It's a super comfortable backpack too. I had to loosen the straps a bit but it hugs my back and doesn't fatigue me at all. Still would recommend you try it out first since YMMV.

I fly approx. 120 times a year so a good backpack that can hold a ton and fit under the seat in front of me is a must.

EDIT: Can't forget about Osprey's lifetime warranty and great customer service. One of the main reasons I buy their products.

That's what I got last year. Got two of them actually (separate orders worked).

May go for a Solo fire pit this year (unless someone here can dissuade me) or the hammock stand.

Hmm Based on 10+ years of working in the bicycle industry I've never seen low margins on bikes or fitness gear in general. At msrp they're making a killing, at sale prices they're cutting you some slack. Those working in the industry don't even bother with 20% off.
Local bike stores have low margins. They make money on accessories. I would surprised if margins on many are above 25%.

I don't really need gear at the moment (more opportunities to use the gear I already have would be great). BUT, it looks like GC and passes are excluded. I've often ordered the national park pass through REI, not that 20% off $80 makes much difference. Just the only thing I'll be purchasing/renewing soon.

I thought rooftop stuff was excluded from these. That's good to know
While it may be now, it definitely wasn't 2 years ago when I bought mine.

I do know "car racks" were definitely excluded (My friend tried to get one the same day using the 20% code and was denied).

REI has introduced new benefits such as free shipping, deeper shop service discount, and used gear trade-ins for their membership. However, membership now costs $30.

We love our Solo Bonfire. I would suggest buying direst from Solo, constantly running 30% off sales, and currently on sale for even more if I'm not mistaken. If you have an AMEX Platinum, currently a $50 off rebate direct with Solo

Noted! A quick search through SD also shows some sales for more than 20% on the Bonfire so may use my coupon on the hammock stand then. Thanks!

Can anybody recommend a good sleeping bag? My wife doesn't like the mummy style bags.

Someone here on SD recommended this aluminum hammock during a similar sale. It ended up being one of my favorite buys all-time we love it so much. Take it with us on every camping trip and also use at home occasionally. It is so easy to setup and use. Still show it off to friends and nobody can believe how light and strong it is!

I have never seen it on sale for any cheaper, but maybe it has and I missed it: https://www.rei.com/product/17439...mock-stand
I have the eno solopod, but like how compact this one breaks down and the included duffle bag.

I was at REI today and looked at a couple they had (made for carry on since the shoulder straps have a cover that zips over to hide them). The nicest one is made by Osprey and the cashier let me know that Osprey has a lifetime warranty so you can always return it to an REI, basically like you can with items bought before REI changed their lifetime warranty on everything to one year like 10 years ago. I was there exchanging a 17 year old belt for a replacement since I broke the plastic buckle last night. lol
Whoa, is this true?? I have an old Osprey daypack that I use daily with holes and broken buckles but didn't want to go through the trouble of shipping with Osprey directly. So you could bring it in-store?? To clarify, I did purchase this pack originally from REI.

That's what the cashier told me when I mentioned I was in the market for a new pack. Not sure if true though.

When was in the Santa Rosa, CA store yesterday, they had a $20 rebate going. It was posted on 8.5x11" printer paper near the cashiers. I think you had to spend like $50 to get it though.
