The current margin on the major bike shop brands is roughly 30%.

That means that for a $500 retail bike, the shop paid $350. Plus, recently they've had to pay $50 shipping for each bike, a charge which used to be waived for large orders but not anymore. After assembly, any ongoing free maintenance and customer service, they would be losing money if they gave a 20% discount and sold that bike for $400.

And that's not even including all the expenses to keep the doors open, like rent, salaries, insurance, utilities, advertising, etc.
Bicycles are pretty low margin (and getting worse) and have lots of related expense and labor. No legit retailer can afford to cut the price 20%.
The benefit and sweet spot, IMO, of the annual member 20% off coupons is looking for a piece of gear that has a solid MSRP (all the way across the board no matter where you look), and snagging it for 20% off at REI. There are restriction uses on the coupon, however you can find some incredible deals when this comes around. Well worth the cost of membership.

You have any experience buying tents? Thinking of using the coupon on an expensive backpacking tent.

The price on this hammock stand recently went up by like 15% or so, so I guess the coupon has you back down to MSRP. Shrug, oh well, I was waiting for the 20% coupons to come out to get the stand, but with the price increase, it's now kind of pointless.
Hmm didn't know about the price increase. I don't remember exactly what we paid but it was around $200 after the discounts I think. Can't find it in my orders online. But I'd say it's totally worth that!

REI has introduced new benefits such as free shipping, deeper shop service discount, and used gear trade-ins for their membership. However, membership now costs $30.
No more cash back, now you will get a coupon

Either the osprey farpoint 40 or rei ruckpack 40. They are both great.

A friend did part time remote customer support for REI just to get 50% off REI items and 20-30% off on REI bikes. I'm assuming margins are there since they are not going to sell it to their own employees for a loss. They probably just don't want to due to potential overhead from returns and support.

For selling things at cost to employees, that sounds about right. In much of general retail sales wholesale cost is 50% of retail price. For bikes, the wholesale cost is typically 70% or more of the MSRP and the more expensive the bike, the less margin the store gets.

Can anybody recommend a good sleeping bag? My wife doesn't like the mummy style bags.
I have seen the Nemo Disco and Big Agnes SideWinder are made for side sleeping to have extra room. There is also the Magma 30 Quilt.

Can you buy multiple items in separate orders to get the discount? Someone mentioned buying 2 Yetis with 2 separate orders.

What to buy
I was looking at National Park Annual Pass that costs $80. With 20% off the final cost will be $64.

I was wondering if I could also use that $20 additional card added after becoming a new member by paying $30 which brings down membership price to just $10 for lifetime.

I am not sure if that will work.

I don't think they allow passes per the T&C.
