Start with the original trilogy, that gives you a good feel for the gameplay. Apollo Justice adds in some new things but it wouldn't make much sense without the initial trilogy. Great Ace is a completely different series and style, less slapstick than the first games. If you want to make the most of your switch hardware, go there, but really, do the trilogy on switch first.

For the Phoenix Wright series are there any in particular that are better than others? Any to avoid?

In for the remaining Ace Attorneys on 3ds. Bought the trilogy last time, so glad to grab the others that are on sale. Also might grab the RE games…
Really wish the same thing would happen with the Layton games.
Is Switch backwards compatible in any way? Will you be able to download or play Wii, Wii U, or 3DS games?
The Nintendo Switch system is not backward compatible with games designed for other systems, and is not currently compatible with controllers designed for other systems. Support for certain controllers may be considered for a future update. We have nothing to announce regarding Virtual Console or other types of digital purchases at this time.
Wish there were more 3DS exclusives. I have like $25 in credit on that console.
Pretty sure you can link your 3DS and Switch accounts together so that the balance is shared between them. I had some leftover credit from an Atlus 3DS sale earlier this year and did that. Used the remaining balance to grab some indie Switch games on sale.
