The Lenovo will have better build quality and better support from the manufacturer. While the specs are better on the gateway, I would go with the Lenovo. But that's just my opinion.

Should I buy (for my kids) this or the Costco flex 5? Flex 5 has the same CPU and RAM but 128GB SSD and touch screen. OS is not my concern...

Total Installed Memory 8 GB
Memory Configuration 4 GB (Onboard)
1 x 4 GB (User-Replaceable)
Maximum Memory Capacity 12 GB

You can only swap out one of the 4GB for an 8GB I guess. I have never heard of such a thing. I thought you could put a 16GB in nearly anything. Ugh.

I don't know if 8GB is sufficient these days.

This Lenovo or keep this refurb Gateway:

Which is better? I don't really like the screen on the Gateway.

First I've ever heard of laptop only accepting 8gb instead of 16gb. Are there cheaper mobos that limit the ram amount to save money? On the plus side at least it's possible to upgrade, some just solder all of it which seems crazy. No need to trash computer over bad ram chips.

Yeah, that kinda sucks. But 12GB should be enough too.

Am not in the market for a laptop, but it's good to start seeing much more reasonable prices on these. This is perhaps the 3rd or 4th I've seen here on SD of late. Repped, OP.

8 GB is just fine for most users.

Before you pay for more memory on any computer in Windows learn how to use Performance Monitor to see what memory you actually use.

Most rarely get to 8GB and if they do it is often bad habits like bunches of tabs open, a program or app that is memory hog and may not even be needed.

I just re-imaged an old 4 GB Dell laptop that runs Win10 20H2 with 2007 Office Pro just fine.

Will RAM run in dual channel, when half of it is onboard?

The viewing angles don't seem great - if I look at it off-axis even a little I get a weird visual shift. And it doesn't get very bright.

The screen on lenovo is a little brighter 300 vs 280 on the Gateway.
