I bought two sets from Walmart as they were on sale for $73. Up to $86 currently but still far better than full price. The knock off ones on Amazon have mixed reviews and supposedly reduced lifespan so I ponied up for the authentic ones.

Thanks!

Contrary to an above post — the 400 and 400s were released at the same time. I actually bought my 400s when this first launched back in 2015. What's crazy is that it's still competitive with other newer models on the market. Critically, there is an abundant supply of third party air filters on the market that won't break the bank like the OEM ones do.

As for why you would want the S — Alexa baby! You can ask for the lights to turn off on the unit or to power the unit off/on or change the air speed. I actually use this feature a lot.

Scheduling is key. You don't need it running 24/7 unless you wfh in a studio apartment.
to be fair, I have the non Wifi version and have it connected to a smart plug. These Coway's are one of the few that retain state when you toggle the power to them. So instead of having yet another IoT device that may/may not actually work, I just do the scheduling with my Tp link smart plug.

I'm not saying non wifi is better or worse, but just that you can get the scheduling in different ways.

That said, with both prices being the same, I'd probably opt for the wifi one

Can detect a fart from across the room and would turn red.
I have a different (RabbitAir) smart filter, which is the same. But because I'm a big child, I also have my smart home set to respond to "did somebody fart?" with the star trek shields up sound, turning the house lights red, and setting both of the filters to maximum speed.

I basically never do that, but it's a great way to make a guest laugh. Or annoy my nesting partner.

I have the 400 and absolutely have no complaints. Sometimes when I passed by the 400 after I finished smoking and returned from the balcony, the machine was instantly on.

I own the 400, not S. I also have the Winix. I love the Coway as it's quiet and pulls in a lot. The winix pulls in less and is louder. The coway is in my kitchen and tv room whereas the winix is in my bedroom.

I'm tempted to replace the winix with this.
Same experience, I have Winix first, then got Coway last sale... now I'm buying two more of these Coway to place my Winix. Wish it was the non-WIFI for $350 again tho

I bought one two years ago and just had it replaced. It was operating and then a loud pop came from the unit and tripped the breaker. They sent one immediately after I sent it out at FEDEX. It's the 400 model but man I love the thing.

You can buy replacement filters on Amazon directly from Coway for $85. And although it only specifies in the title that it's for 300/300s, I am guessing it's the same for 400/400s after browsing the Coway store and not seeing a specification for 400/400s specific max2 filters.

Don't rely on Amazon for stuff like that.
