It seems to be true that TP-LINK is phasing out Kasa. All signs point to them expanding their TAPO line and killing Kasa. I've stopped buying their products until TP-LINK starts being more transparent with their plans for the Kasa brand.
At CES last year, TP-link announced plans to get Kasa to work with Apple HomeKit. They've since announced they've cancelled that, and brought ZERO new products to CES 2022 under the Kasa banner… only TAPO branded devices.
The theory is that Kasa markdowns will be more frequent in US to sell off inventory before making the brand announcement here.
There are reports of manufacturers/retailers getting notices of "discontinued without replacement" on Kasa products.

I also have a third bulb that will go from 50% to very low, about 10%, and stay there until I adjust it manually back to 50%. Given that this only happens every 2 months or so I'd still say the savings are worth it, but these bulbs are nowhere near flawless.
