If you want to live with a unthrottled machine, for R5 fully turn off boost(google this) will do(only 25w performance on CPU), for R6, just leave everything default, it will self limit CPU to 30w in gaming session then no GPU throttle anymore but you suffer a lot from very low CPU performance(25-30w). Other laptops using similar CPU usually give full 40-45w to their CPU since its their design spec. Any temper with R6's CPU limit will cause throttle came a lot earlier.

It's due to the bad thermal design and cost down on GPU and CPU vrm compare to previous R4, btw, the Alienware m15 R5/R6/R7 is using the same cost down design as Dell G15 series, teardown proof:
R4 10870h + 3070:
Attachment 11280016
R5 5800h + 3070:
Attachment 11280013
R6 11800h + 3070:
Attachment 11280004
Dell G15 11800h + 3060:
Attachment 11280022
You will notice the R5/R6/R7 GPU cost down from 12 phase vrm to 4+1 phase and CPU from 6 phase to 4 phase. So when you play 3D game long enough, it will overheat and throttle your overall system performance.

Thanks for your feedback.
Having said that, the Alienware is thinner and lighter, so it is not entirely a fair comparison. But then again, since the Legion 5 Pro from Walmart is easily the better option compared to this, I think the real comparison should be made between that and the GE76, in which case it's a tougher decision, and I don't think you could go wrong with either. I believe the Ryzen CPUs run hotter than Intel's 11th Gen CPUs, and also have less options for undervolting (and maybe clockspeed too), so if that's your thing, you'll have more flexibility on the GE76.
Thanks for your feedback.
I have both w/ QHD and 3070, will highly recommend Legion 5 Pro for longevity. Thermal management on Legion is top notch while Alienware R5/R6 sucks to hell even repasts with same Legion Pro thermal paste won't help.
Also Legion's extended warranty is very affordable $80 for 3 years. While Alienware asking $400 for 2nd year.
Btw, Alienware's tech support is the worst I've used, I report the thermal and power throttle issue, they remote to my laptop first uninstalled the newest nvidia driver and reinstalled the old driver from its own dell update service then required me to login geforce experience and update from there, he fully ignore my questions about why not directly download newest driver from nvidia and install. I reject the necessity of login in geforce experience in order to update driver. And he just shutdown the support line. Very incompetent and rude.
Only thing good about Alienware after sale service is they're easy to return within 30 days just mouse click away.

Hard pass.

Ryzen CPUs tend to run hotter than Intel's 11th gen, and cannot undervolt (that I found), so those two factors pushed me towards the GE76 myself. I do not really play AAA titles, so the GE76 made more sense to me. Also, I have 3 months to change my mind at Costco, in case a Legion 7 deal comes around. The L7 with its vapor chamber should have better thermals than either the GE76 or L5 Pro.
