Chevron is the parent company of both brands. Completely different eco-system and shouldn't have been mentioned in the post, as this set off the other brands alert.
Good to know...didn't know a deal alert would be triggered by anything not in the title.

These are crap. Had to do a job and it crapped out on me. Walmart has a $15 off brand that works ok. It's square instead of round like this one. But about the same size.

I bought this at the normal ~$50 price about year ago. Compared a few around that price point and thought this one, with its variable speed setting, was best. It has worked really well and dust collection is solid. Paired with a vacuum and it's excellent.

Square sanders are typically called "finish sanders" and don't remove as much material as an orbital sander. As far as the reliability of this one it's possible you got a defective one but who knows? I had a Kmart "Benchmark " brand square finish sander for years that worked great but eventually needed replacing so I got a Makita. I have a Dewalt orbital sander for the more aggressive projects and a Makita belt sander for the larger jobs. Each has a purpose.

Thanks for that input. I'm not really the handyman type. All that I know is that after an hour of light use, mine had a burnt smell and died. Maybe I got a dud. But what got me was I was in the middle of the job and it happened. I had to drive to Walmart (15 minutes away) to get the $15 one. Which by the ways is still going after multiple jobs.

I'm trying my hand on a project of refinishing a breakfast table, would this help or to much for probably a veneer top? Paint strip only?

This is very similar to the Harbor Freight 2.8 amp with variable speed that was on sale for $25.

I was going to pull the trigger until I read all this because I just spent 80 bucks on a rigid orbital hand sander and a damn thing is so heavy because I have nerve damage and it's just really heavy to my hand and arm.
