Ok so this involves the infamous Home Depot " Hack" Have seen a few naive people here that have convinced themselves that this "hack" is fraudulent and we're all committing sins and likely will go to hell when we die. To all you folks, you failed to realize Home Depot has been offering this hack for years, and they still continue to this day have that option available. If this was not intentional and they're losing tons of money on people utilizing the hack, they'd shut it down ASAP, cancel all orders that hacked them and send warning messages along with the cancellation email. Yet they've done nothing of the sorts, but continue to still offer it. What does that hell you then? Sorry guys had to get that out of the way .

This hack is just like the test of them add the 3 tool combo drill, driver and wrench to your cart.
Im doing so, you should get a popup that says you get a free tool, takes you a page with 4 listed tools for you to choose from, pick the $149 Ratchet and click add both to cart.
Then if you go to your cart, you'll see the adjusted price of $253.70 for the 3 tool combo.
The key here is to select to have the 3 tools shipped to your home, it's free. Then select to have the ratchet picked up in store. If it's not available at your store, you can pick one that I'd available there.
Then checkout and pay for both, but right after that go back into your online account and cancel the ratchet. Just wait for your 3 tools to be shipped.
Normally just the stubby alone with battery and charger is around $250, here you're betting an extra battery, Fuel Impact Hammer Drill and Fuel Impact Driver for free basically. You can sell the drill & driver for $70-100/each depending on whether you're including the batteries and charger or not. End up paying like $50-70 for the Stubby. The listings on Fleabay that selling an open box/new, some might have done this hack as well, that's been me quite a few times.

Here's what your cart should look like :

Did this to the letter and the site will NOT let me cancel just the ratchet. I have never been able to get the hack even one time. I thought that maybe this time would be different, waste of time for me.....again!
I found out why my whole order was cancelled, it is because the item I wanted was not immediately available for pickup so it is actually a "ship to store" even it shows "Pick up", and this means at the cancellation page, there are "Cancel" buttons for both items, when I click either one of these buttons, the next page shows both item together and the whole order will be cancelled (shown the screenshots below)

In my successful "hacked" orders, the "Pick up in store" item is available at store, the cancellation page only showed the cancel button for the ship to home item, clicking that will only cancel that item.

The normal way to hack is choose pick up in store for the item you want and cancel the ship to home item.

The easiest way in my opinion, for any combination of in-store, ship to home, ship to pick-up, is to use the chat with customer service feature on the HD app and tell them to manually cancel the item you don't want. I usually do ship both to home and tell them to cancel the item I do not want. Saves me a trip to the store.

All I need is the 3/8" stubby as I have these other tools. Wish there was a way to cancel the items within the bundle. I remember some previous hacks allowed you to keep just the tool(s) you wanted.

You can get the m12 stubbies down to $127 with the Buy More Save More. Add stubby, m18 hackzall and the m18 hammer drill.

Do the reverse. Order what you WANT to keep, to the store - and ship to home the ratchet. Then, cancel the ratchet.

edit: lmao not sure why the downvote. This is how I've always done the hack, and it's worked for me.
Maybe because it didn't work????? I've NEVER had it work. Did what was in the OP, didn't work.

I was comparing like to like. The M12 stubby is far more powerful than any other 12 volt wrenches according to all the testing I've seen.

The 18 volt wrenches should be stronger than a 12 volt, but then they are far more bulky and harder to get into tight spaces like the m12 stubby can
You are right about 12v not being a problem when done right but I have to admit I was disappointed with my stubby. I watched all the tests and was very excited to get it. I couldn't believe something so small could be so powerful. It only broke a few lug nuts loose on my Passat at 103ft/lbs and then completely failed to remove the lugs on my Silverado at 140ft/lbs. Both with a fully charged 6-cell 4ah battery. It is still a tiny and useful tool but can't do what I need it to do. Anybody holding out for the 1/2" version don't bother, 3/8" is more practical at it's power level. I can do the same stuff with my impact driver although the shape of the stubby could be an advantage. I ended up returning it and jumping on the Rigid high torque monster. It may be heavy but I know it will handle everything I throw at it.

I was thinking about getting the compact stubby version but I guess its not as good. I'd like a few more m18's if I keep using these m12's enough. I was looking into the m18 deals but they didn't seem too great in the hackable category. The weird thing is that HD cancelled my order for the ratchet in the combo pickup so I had to do the opposite and actually try the hack earlier, first time caller.

Rabbit Hole ensued.

Given the $138 for the combo and ratchet at $90
Maybe get $60-$65ish for the drill or driver(each), maybe?

With the other deal the stubby @$115
Maybe get $130ish for it?
M12 REDLITHIUM XC 4.0 $40ish?
M12 REDLITHIUM 2.0 $30ish?

In pictured deals, with drill/driver $138 way of thinking
We pay
$43 for m12 Hacksaw, can get $65ish?
$61 for m12 Compact Inflator, can get $70ish?

Eh. To each their own, I guess. It's broken all the lug nuts that I've tried it on so far, and the main thing I got it for was the small form factor so I could crack bolts in hard to reach places that a 18 volt impact wrench would never fit in

Put another way, If you don't need the stubbiness, don't buy the stubby

I just moved into my first home and need to build a basic DIY tool kit. Is this a good deal if I want to keep all the tools? Or would I save more by hacking individual tools one at a time?

I'm just trying to figure out why people are grabbing a 12v tool to break/torque lug nuts?

Personally I grabbed it because the m12 stubby was way cheaper than the 18 volt and had a smaller form factor. Being able to break lug nuts is just a bonus on a 12 volt

I tried the M12 Stubby in real application and it is not actually much more powerful than an impact driver! It is compact but the Ryobi P261 impact wrench (the brushed model) beat it by far which was a surprise to me because the claimed torques were not that different (300 vs 250). It couldn't even bust a 120ftlb lug nut with 2ah battery. Just use a socket adapter on M12 impact driver if you are not gonna do heavy duty stuff. Otherwise, go for M18. Extra $115 for Stubby compared to $138 two tool deal is not worth it imo.
That is your problem: 2ah battery. Try using a 6ah or even a 4ah battery. A world of difference.

Because their other tools are also 12v like the handy wrench.

You may save more by hacking individual but this combo is a really great starter for DIY home owners.
