That is a quad core i3, exactly same as an i5 but with slightly reduced integrated GPU. Normally 17.3" FHD laptops are a bit rare and they cost slightly higher than 15.6" models with similar hardware spec.

For a budget 17-inch model, this has pretty good specs in my opinion. No need for my purposes to pay more for upgrades. 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD are above "basic" for any budget model. I still see many with 4GB and/or 128GB to 256GB SSDs.

Did you look up the benchmarks for this CPU?
Scores 9,945 on Passmark. Not a slouch by any means, being quad-core.

As for any missing wishes I have (and what does one expect for a budget like $429? laugh out loud):
  • The silver color makes for low contrast when typing with my older eyes. I can't quite type by touch. At least I use both hands and am fairly good with my fuzzy logic method.
  • No backlighting but to be frank, that would not make much difference as is often pointed out with this color scheme from HP. They keep pumping them out though.
  • FP reader would save a couple of seconds but I am used to using a PIN on my laptops.
  • Close to 5 lb means less portability, but it is rare for this size to be under 5 lb anyway so that isn't what you buy the larger screen models for. I see 17-inch ones clocking in at around 6 lbs. often. Having owned the LG gram in a 17-inch model, it's heaven for its weight to screen ratio. But the price is over $1,000. I am always seeing great deals on acceptable laptops that this OP lists, so thank you! Every laptop deal I see has had some compromises. I'm just unwilling to special order one at retail to get the elusive "ideal specs". Plus, I do enjoy window shopping.

Good deal if it fits your needs. There are a couple previous threads on this with a high rating.

It's easy to add a second SSD with a cable and some good quality double sided tape. The drive carriage was a bit hard to find when I looked.

No complaints so far from the two people using these.

Wife just texted me saying that the screen on her old Lenovo cracked (i think it's the housing but oh well). This might make for a nice replacement.

One of the two 2-star reviews says this laptop can't be started without wi-if access. Usually not a problem for me, but it could be when traveling.

For 11 Home edition, you do required to connect to wifi or internet during OOBE at wifi-connection page.
However, immediately after you connected, you can shut down the wifi (phone or your router connection) and system will prompt you to creat Local profile instead of MSA.

Intel® Core™ i3-1125G4 (up to 3.7 GHz with Intel® Turbo Boost Technology, 8 MB L3 cache, 4 cores, 8 threads)

How reliable is the HP spec information for memory? It states 1x8GB and two slots, so I could buy a single 8GB stick to double the RAM unless they've slotted 2x4GB...

nice laptop, except for the keyboard, which is silver with light gray letters, so HP needs to use black ink on the keys

Have a laptop with the same key color combo. Had to buy keyboard stickers to see the keys better. Don't know why in the hell manufactures use the same or similar colors.

Although the display is FHD and IPS, brightness is only 250nits and color gamut (43% NTSC) is low as well: ~70% is average. I do appreciate that they disclose it though.

70% ntsc is around 100% srgb which isn't average.

I'm guessing "no" but can you downgrade Windows 11 to Windows 10?
