FWIW, these are Trackmaster trains, and are intended to be used on Trackmaster tracks.

My pickup order did not add a $5.99 charge. Maybe it "auto-switched" to delivery instead of curbside pickup. This has happened to me more than once purchasing from walmart.com. You really have to pay attention to your order with them as you check out.

The amount of cost cutting with the Thomas train toys over the years is pretty eye opening. Probably more so than any other line of toys.
Just even five or so years ago, I was buying all wood trains, track pieces, and even full metal motorized trains, for really good sale prices.

At the rate they've been going, it might end up being as cheap as happy meal toys in a decade.

As cheap as the happy meal toys we remember as kids. Got my kids a Sing 2 happy meal from McDonalds a month ago and it was 100% cardboard you folded into a character. Thinner than the happy meal box itself.

Mcdonalds has purposely committed to 0% plastic in Happy Meal toys, I believe.

Not sure when they made that call because my son just had a happy meal with a rolling plastic Mario Kart character.

As for the Thomas Train quality, saw these in the store the other day and they look way cheaper then the die cast stuff. The die cast stuff has taken a nose dive like a previous poster mentioned. We've got a lot of Thomas trains and the most recent ones we've purchased were like 70%+ plastic. Our older ones are at least 50%+ metal and have a good weight to them. The biggest thing to note about these trains is the connecting system. They're small plastic hooks and loops. These hooks stretch out over time from play causing them to disconnect too easily while playing. It looks like you can buy replacement hook sets from various places, but the older trains have a triangular bolt/screw you can pull the train apart with and replace the hooks, but the newer trains are just rivets. I find this to be a highly infuriating change because I can't take it apart to replace the hooks without modifying it.

Same happened with me. I tried to switch to shipping and back to pick up, but they still charge $5.99 for orders below $35. Their new website sucks big time.

Just ordered, no shipping added to my order.
Did you select pick up on the item page itself, was there one at your store?
Those are two instances where it might auto-switch to delivery.
