Last time the price was this low was July or August 2021, at which point it shot up to $600 then $680. Next cheapest price I've seen is HD for $584.

I don't have one, but it gets good praise on woodworking forums.

In November of 2020 it was $385 and in early 2017, 3rd party was $295.... Inflation is here.

--------------------

For the homeowner and average DIYer, the more versatile, but lighter duty WEN 6524 Oscillating Belt and Spindle Sander [amazon.com] for $195 at Amazon might be a better option. For military, HD at $201.43 [homedepot.com] -10% delivered would be a better deal.

For just an oscillating spindle sander, here are a couple of other choices that have been cheaper.... No, they are not as 'robust' as the Jet, but neither is the price.

Shop Fox W1831 1/2 HP Single Phase Oscillating Spindle Sander [amazon.com] -$200

Grizzly Industrial G0538-1/3 HP Oscillating Spindle Sander [amazon.com] - $254

Update and same as Shop Fox above--- Grizzly G0739 - 1/2 HP Benchtop Oscillating Spindle Sander [grizzly.com] -$164

Shop Fox/Grizzly isn't bad, but that WEN is garbage.

"WEN... For when being off by a few degrees is goo'd'nuff." Lol.

And as a good friend once said. "Inflation has been here for 40 years if you are Lower to middle class. 20 years if middle class. And never if in the upper class." Lol.

PS... anyone wanna trade a sheet of 5x5 Baltic Birch for one of my kidneys? 😆

Great little OSS. It's a tool you'll only buy once.

Lots of the Amazon reviews show shipment issues. Not a problem with the tool itself, but it seems that the packaging plus careless delivery drivers plus an 82 pound device doesn't play too well. I'm sure Amazon will take it back if there's a problem but it's a pain to deal with returns on bulky items like this.

I agree about the WEN 6524 sander being a valid low cost option, I've had one for 3 years now and it's worked fine, admittedly for occasional use.
The common 4x24 belt size opens up a raft of low cost belt options.
For that matter, I've had good (luck?) results with other low-cost WEN tools, including a 10" variable speed drill press going on year 5 now.

Btw your Amazon link to the WEN 6524 sander goes back to the $500+ Jet sander. The correct link is:

So much tool snobbery on this "deal" website. A little surprising from you Incomplete, as some of your posts have some good info (and you obviously have an open-ended budget for accumulating tools). But some some of us are not as fortunate.

Yeah, if you need a spindle sander on a daily basis, say for whatever you're making as part of your business especially, this is likely a good deal. You probably already have some other commercial quality woodworking tools as well. Or should, anyway.

Fun fact: the Grizzly combination oscillating spindle/belt sander is identical to the WEN, Bauer (Harbor Freight), and Triton models. I was a little miffed when my Grizzly branded one arrived and I learned this, but it's been fine for my occasional use. When I need better capacity, speed control, power, etc. I have a shopsmith PowerPro. It doesn't oscillate (although they offer an attachment that does), but digital speed control at least partially mitigates that.

For the occasional hobbyist, the versatile (spindle and belt) Wen is fine for the price.

For years, I used a drill press for a spindle sander and with the variable speeds, I thought it worked well.

Thanks, I will check out the link.

Kind of helpful.... lol .... I can remember the time when I would have been ecstatic to have that Wen around for the oscillating spindle and belt sanding.

That is about right for inflation from currency debasement, but it started in early 1900's and now in overdrive.

Thanks, I had forgotten those four and a couple of other combo units came out of the same factory. Even the Shop Fox [amazon.com] and Grizzly [grizzly.com] are the same for the dedicated spindle, but the Grizzly is on sale for $164.

Regardless of where you stand on whether this Jet sander or WEN spindle/belt sander is a good deal, I strongly recommend for any of them you have an "abrasive cleaning stick" handy when using.
This is especially important if you're sanding pine, or any other resinous wood, which tends to quickly clog spindle sleeves/belts and reduce performance.

I was lucky enough to snag several Craftsman belt cleaning sticks a few years back during Sear's "self-liquidation phase" (RIP SYWR points, lol).
Anyway, my stock has started to dwindle and I may have to resort to some Powertec ones, such as these on Amazon [amazon.com].

I've even found them useful to extend the life of random orbit discs when sanding some projects.

Do those belt cleaning sticks eventually dry out? I cannot remember which version is the better for longevity.

Yes, there were a lot of deals with Sears and the SYWR points program. That was when we accumulated a load of the welded 30" Gladiator cabinets and four of the 48" upright. It was like, no wonder why they are going out of business.

PS: I should have known, but the sanding belts do have a shelf life. Some older 3M and Makita silicone carbide belts purchased in bulk separate at the glued seam. I now have an endless supply of pad sandpaper.
