If a cable isn't specifically shown as "outdoor rated" or "Exterior-grade" for outside use, then it is not suitable for anything more than very short term use outside.(like running an Ethernet cable out to the garage for a LAN party or something)

The sheathing on most ethernet cables is only slightly UV resistant, not UV stable, which means that sunlight will start breaking down the surface of the sheathing and then the added agitation of wind, rain, freezing, animals and insects will quickly lead to water infiltration and failure of the cable.

Cat 5e is plenty for the vast majority of home users. Few people have any devices over 1G at home, and Monoprice cat5e cables will run 1G easily all day long. Monoprice cables are good quality and overspeced, and will run 10G over short distances such as between devices in the same room.

In a commercial environment, I can understand not purchasing any 5e patch cables at this point so that there is one standard and the cables don't get mixed up. If wiring a new home, going with at least Cat6 inside the walls is the better long term strategy.

Just get a spool of cat6 and make your own cables to whatever custom length you need. Punch down where you can otherwise crimp your own terminations (it's very easy with passthrough ends). It's so much more efficient since you won't have extra cable curled up everywhere and you'll save a lot of money in the long run (GET IT!!!?!!) especially if you split it up with friends, neighbors, etc.

The…long run…30 ft cable…I don't get it…wait, heHahehajehahaaaaa

While that is a good idea, it does require effort getting other people on board, splitting costs, etc. At 10 bucks, my potential use case of running a good long CAT 5 cable up to a part of my home where WiFi is the only option, plus getting a 2nd cable, both covered by a lifetime Monoprice warranty…is much more desirable.

If The outdoor cables are exposed and not buried I'm guessing I need to get the cat 6 outdoor shielded instead of direct burial? Thanks

I have one of these cables outdoor for 7 years already and still going strong. The outdoor rated cables are super thick. So if my cable ever break, I will buy another indoor cable to replace it.

I've seen commercial-use environments where good 5e cables perform much better than cat 6.

When I got this bright idea to start making my own ethernet cables three months ago, I ended up spending $500 on tools, connectors, and 1000ft cat6 cable that is as stiff as a board and barely bendable. Should have stuck to just buying pre-made cables. Haha.

Cat 5e 350mhz I have from monoprice does 2.5Gbps no problem, it can do higher but like you said almost no home user has a network above 1Gbps.
