Don't overlook the fact that this is a SAS drive and not SATA. If you don't understand what I mean, then this drive is not for you.

You mean shuck them? If so, you're joke didn't work.

No these can't be shucked, they are already shucked.... there's no enclosure.

Z420 only has SATA ports. You can add an SAS controller via a PCIe x8 slot from LSI for $90 on Amazon or cheaper used on eBay.

This product line comes in 6 Gbit/sec and 12 Gbit/sec - this particular model is 12 Gbit/sec, of course backward compatible with 6 Gbit/sec. Also, this model is 4K sectors on both the drive and host side (ie, not 512b sector emulated)

Found a data sheet here:

i don't think the z420's had a SAS controller. Does yours have an HBA?

Any recommendations on a good Sas controller and cables?

looks like they were configurable with the LSI 9212
https://support.hp.com/ro-en/document/c03274166
you could probably do better because I think I think this drive is 12gbps and the 9212 was 6gbps, but I doubt that would matter in a spinning drive in a z420

Link doesn't seem to be working, but I found it with a search. Unfortunately the 5% bucks ended a day or two ago.

Anyone know if Toshiba will honor this as a valid reseller for warranty purposes? Haven't opened my 16TB drives from WD recently...

If you bought the WD 16TB ones, these Toshiba are likely not for you. WD ones were SATA. These are SAS, which are commonly used in disk arrays at big businesses or cloud computing vendors (AWS, etc.)

If you're not comfortable opening the PDF, it says:

The person selling this product has a Caution by
Fakespot Guard, because:

• There are few reviews mentioning "Scam", "Fake
tracking number'', or questioning product
authenticity.
• There is a spike of negative reviews in the last
month.

Again I do not know this seller, s/he may 100% legit, this is just what Fakespot had to say.

Thanks for the concern but I picked up 12 of the WD Golds for a storage server which does have a SAS backplane. Just not willing to give up actual drive warranties for the extra storage from these if Toshiba would deny these as legit purchases.
