It's not a matter if something has expired or not. Food expiration is a continuum. If the expiration date is a year after production the product is 1/3 stale 4 months in, half stale 6 months in. Eating something 11 months in is already pretty stale. Also, eating something 13 months is typically still safe, just stale. It's not like they put chips in them to let out expiring chemicals exactly a year later.
