Equifax Data Breach Settlement (Credit Monitoring Instructions and Activation Code) - Yahoo Mail.pdf 91.5 KB View
THIS IS A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
not a slick deal post for anything to buy.

For those of you affected by the Equifax data breached back a number of years ago, the FTC settlement is final now that the appellate court has ruled. Back in 2019 we had the option of choosing either the "upto" $125 OR 4 years of free credit monitoring. Remember this thread?
PSA Equifax Breach–Act by October 15, 2019 or Your Claim Will Be Denied

Well, if you chose the $125 option, you were told that amount would vary on the number of people who choose this option. So I chose the OTHER option to get 4 years of monitoring since my info was out there and then some idiot went and opened up a Costco membership and credit card in my name. I EVEN KNOW WHAT THE F*&^ THE IDIOT LOOKS LIKE. Anyhow, I digress.

For those of you who chose the credit monitoring option, you should have gotten an email around Feb 3, letting you know that your settlement entitled you to 4 years of this monitoring and it gives you a code to sign up for this service.

Look for the email from these people in your inbox or spam box.

So you get 4 years of credit monitoring, but it doesn't start until 4.5 years after the breech occurred?

Makes me glad I went for the cash option - Now I just need to wait until they send me my 7 cents or whatever the "Up to $125" ends up being...

What if you don't have the email? It must have gone to spam and they are automatically deleted after 30 days.

Such garbage. Equifax should've been criminally charged for this.

150,000,000 people were compromised. 150 MILLION.

My wife and I filed separate claims.I got this code and she did not - and now they are jerking me off insisting that she either did not file a claim or did not choose this option.

Blame Richard F. Smith [wikipedia.org]
He ran Equifax for 12 years after he left GE. The Equifax culture was all his doing. He ran it like he did when he was floating around GE. Cut everything to the bone. He ran my division for a while. WORST President we ever had. He quit Equifax before they could fire him and then walked away with 108+ million.

Now that the bad guys have all the basic personal info needed to wreck havok:
1. https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles...aud-alerts
Token credit lock.
An extra step for the bad guys you get around, even though they have all the basic info to pass id verification as you.

2. https://faq.ssa.gov/en-us/Topic/article/KA-02220

Later on, should your id be stolen, change the ssi as another small roadblock.

3. Irs.gov and Medicare.gov and ssa.gov
One ought to create online accounts, unique passwords, and lock things down.
(E.g. You can specify no changes to your medicare account unless you show up in person with id at their offices.
Ditto with ssi checks.)

4. Mobile phone.
Setup a port out lock and/or pin to prevent your number from being stolen.

5. All online accounts
https://haveibeenpwned.com/

Change any passwords to unique ones.

You can create a pattern like (capital letter of site name) + (number) + (special character) + (a word you'll use over and over across sites) if you want an easy to remember password pattern.

Otherwise, Edge and other browsers have password managers (but you will want to backup the list in case the data gets erased).

6. Write letters to senators.
Why id criminals don't get chased to hell is beyond me. Tons of people willing to punish them hard, but with today's laws, id thieves, store thieves, etc all get away too easy.

7. Experian getting hacked releasing its own token id theft service??
You can already imagine how useless this 4 year offer might be.
