A correction on this: The PS4 version still has the DLC needing to be paid for. However, the PS5 version does not. They packaged all the DLC in for free with it, along with the game looking & playing better.

Meanwhile, the sequel, Lost Judgment, does allow you to play the PS4 version with a free PS5 digital upgrade like so many other PS4 titles have. But the DLC does sell separately and with both PS4/PS5 versions packaged in.

So if you want to get Judgment, you can either get it for PS4 or for PS5, but you'd have to buy both versions separately. If you have a PS5, go for it on that cause of the bump in graphics and all prior DLC included.

TL;DR Summary -
Judgment (PS4) - DLC sold separately, no PS5 upgrade
Judgment (PS5) - DLC included

Lost Judgment (PS4) - DLC sold separately*, PS5 digital upgrade included (PS4 disk required to play it)
Lost Judgment (PS5) - DLC sold separately*
* All Lost Judgment DLC unlocks both the PS4 and PS5 versions of said DLC

I still wish I hadnt bought the PS4 version mere months before this version. Greedy assholes gave no method at all to upgrade aside from rebuying. Doesnt even have more content.

It's a bit different, story-wise, from the Yakuza series. Given it covers a different protagonist, that is to be expected. But both the Judgment and Yakuza games have been staples of enjoyment for a long time. Yakuza 0 all the way to Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a great and consistent series of games. Judgment and Lost Judgment are more recent, but are also very good.

I unknowingly picked up Judgement for PS4 assuming there was an upgrade. Doesn't run very well on PS5 (30fps). Good to know I can pick up Lost Judgement for PS4 and get a free upgrade. I've had the PS5 version wishlisted for some time and haven't seen it below $30.

Are both series set in the same universe?

Played through a good bit of the Yakuza series through Xbox GamePass. Really fun series. I may pick this up digitally from the Xbox Store if it's a similar price. I want to try the Judgement series even though it doesn't have many connections to the Yakuza characters. I like the work the studio(s) have done with Yakuza and I figure it's time I actually spend some money on developers instead of riding the 3 year/$90 GamePass ride.

Really really wished sega ported this to PC. But no, cause of the voice actors used, both games are console exclusive. We were lucky to even have a sequel. fun fact, this is the only Sega IP to be on many consoles but not on PC

I get the enthusiasm to give back to the Devs, especially the Yakuza studio, but MSFT licensing a title or series to gamepass isn't cheap by any means so the Sega and the studio aren't losing out. I do purchase their physical copies as well to be able to play when it leaves Gamepass. Even have gone back to get the PS2, PS3, PS4 & XBSX titles their quality in story telling stands out for sure in a sea of AAA open world games.

I found Lost judgment ~$15 used so will wait until Judgment is at a similar price for XB.

Playing through this game right now and I love it. As I'm getting older I'm getting a bit lazy/impatient when it comes to playing games. E.g. I played 2 hour of Horizon Forbidden West and put it down cause I just felt like I spent too much time picking up items and having to learn the controls and having flashback of spending so much time in the menus in the first game. Maybe I'll give it another shot in the future but it just didn't catch my attention. This is true for a lot of games for me nowadays where they all have a leveling, crafting, looting and grinding system.

Judgment for me was a lot better balance. A lot of the same systems exists but they're not deep at all and I ignored most of it and am still able to feel like I'm getting the full experience. What I personally enjoy with this game is a well paced game with good amount of action and story. It feels like you can control your own pace e.g. there'll be a lot of scenes with dialogue but you can skip each line (instead of whole cut scene) so you can read the text and press X to get to the next line in the dialogue instead of waiting for them to finish talking. I'm really enjoying this game and think it has much better pacing than Yakuza 2-5 due to the above system. I have not played Yakuza 6 or 0 so don't know how those work. Yakuza 0 will probably be my next game after this.
