I have this exact one from the last sale, and for changing watch batteries, it is mighty handy.

For doing hand work, there is no need for anything brighter of fancier.

Is the battery compartment part of the head lamp? if so, does it feel heavy? comfortable for long duration wear?

It uses 3 AAA not heavy at all. Don't shine that bright but it is good for small tasks like working on the plumbing under the sink it putting a pc together. I would try to go hiking with it the beam throw is not that far. I've had the same one for 10 years still working

Does it have to use Max batteries? Have you tried regular alkaline aaa or rechargeables like Eneloop?

I prefer the headlamps with the built in rechargeable batteries, headlamps with batteries you have to change out just seem dated to me

This is honestly such backwards thinking. Internally non-user replaceable battery, as popularized by Apple, makes the device disposable. When the battery goes bad or is degraded, you can't really replace it.

Instead, I can just buy standard rechargeable batteries, usually of high quality like Eneloops and use that. If the battery goes bad, I can easily replace it myself and it's standard.

Eh, I can see both positions. I use eneloops in my stuff but honestly, the AAAs don't last that long in a headlamp. If he has one that uses lithium (if) the battery would probably be lighter and last longer. If it isn't lithium than I wouldn't see much of a point.

As far as disposable, if it's a decent battery (if) it would probably outlive the light.

Sure, but there is no reason why we can't standardize replaceable lithium batteries too. Why does it have to be built-in?
