Well, after tons of research at one point, and from a reddit post I found..

-Slight bump in performance. Gold can do 249MB/s, Red Pro can do 240MB/s.
-Gold has an MTBF of 2.5 million hours, Red Pro only 1 million.
-Gold has an annual failure rate spec, Red Pro does not.
-Red Pro has a workload rate of 300TB/yr, Gold's specs are defined for a workload of 219TB/yr but the drives are designed for 550TB/yr.
-Gold is more power hungry. 7.1/6.7W for sequential read/write vs. 5.7W on the Red Pro. 5W idle vs. 2.8W on the Red Pro.
-Gold has a higher operating shock rating of 70G vs. 30G read write, 65G read only on the Red Pro.
-Gold is slightly louder on seeks at 36dBA vs. 29dBA
-Gold weighs 10g more than a Red Pro.

TL;DR: Gold is specced to be more reliable but consumes more power.

Now in my opinion.. If they're exactly the same price, and If your NAS is tucked away somewhere and sound isn't an issue, go with the Gold. *Potentially* more reliable down the road.

Golds can also be used in Surveillance and other instances where a Red Pro probably wouldn't be a good idea
I got 2 gold 16 tb drives from the deal a few months ago for my unraid build. I have had no issues with the drives and performance is pretty good. Don't forget the the paypal 12% cash back if decide to grab one of these but you have to purchase from Wd.com. Same price as Amazon. Launch the paypal app, go to deals section, search western digital, and click shop now. Pay with paypal and should get the gold points in couple of months. I did this and when I got the gold drives in February and now have my gold points. 6700 points
The 16TB Red Pro and 16TB Golds are still $299.99 on the WD directly. Been $299.99 for a while.

16tb Red Pro http://www.westerndigital.com/pro...#WD161KFGX

I guess if you have Amazon CC / Giftcards that's enticing to order on Amazon.

WD Direct you could potentially get decent cashback as well.

Not that it matters... but build date for the Gold I received was like early to mid 2021. Maybe they just had an excess.

Solid price for a good drive by an authorized seller. Not in the market ATM, but I'm really relieved to see HDD prices becoming more sane these days.

Make sure you check those boxes when you get the order. I got two cheap Purples two weeks ago instead of these 16TB reds I ordered.

Any opinion on whether gold or red pro is better or what the key differences would be? I'm a newbie looking to set up a decent NAS and this is the first time in hearing about WD gold

Gold has more endurance than Red. Trade off is mainly noise produced by the gold as they are enterprise drives and the endurance but not much else is different.

The red is already super loud. Can't imagine using the gold. I'm already in the next room and can still hear it

With the increased noise/power I could imagine they would presumably produce more heat? If I were to throw some gold's in a Synology would it potentially get significantly hotter in theory than a red or red pro would? I would imagine it would

edit; thank you for your extended breakdown I appreciate it!

Pretty decent deal. In before Taiwan gets taken over? Too early?
WD manufacturers are mainly in Thailand and Malaysia… but still that's not funny…

No problem. Technically the gold uses slightly more power, using more power will produce more heat.

-Gold is more power hungry. 7.1/6.7W for sequential read/write vs. 5.7W on the Red Pro. 5W idle vs. 2.8W on the Red Pro.

However, I have no idea what's under the hood of either drive. Gold could have better cooling mechanism, No idea. But the bottom line is they're going to be about the same. Shouldn't base this purchase based off heat dissipation considering they're 1-2 watts power consumption from each other.

It would only be a minor incursion, probably wouldn't affect HDD production. 😀
